Man Utd’s Marcus Rashford given ‘worst-possible’ criticism by Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher says Marcus Rashford’s output has stooped as low as Anthony Martial’s as he issued a stinging verdict on the Manchester United forward.

Having missed the Champions League draw with Galatasaray in midweek, Rashford turned in a woeful display in Saturday night’s 1-0 defeat at Newcastle. He was given a mark of just 2/10 by the Manchester Evening News and was hauled off around the hour mark.

Liverpool legend Carragher reckons, as a local player, Rashford should be straining every sinew for the club, even if he is out of form, but hasn’t been impressed with his body language, comparing him to long-term Old Trafford flop Martial, who was also poor against the Magpies.

“It was an unacceptable performance [from Rashford], for a few reasons,” said Carragher on Sky’s Super Sunday. “He didn’t play midweek. It’s not easy when you’re playing away in Europe on Wednesday and then on Saturday, but he didn’t travel.

“I’ve been a local player and it isn’t easy. When it’s not going well, it’s your job to fix it and you’ve got to drag people up with you.

“I’m watching Marcus Rashford now and he reminds me of Martial and that’s the worst-possible thing you can say about him. A foreign player [in Martial] who comes in, hasn’t done the business, doesn’t care, really, and that’s a fact with Martial.

“Marcus Rashford is now looking like Anthony Martial. As a local lad, it’s your job to drag those other players up. If you’re confidence is down or you’re not scoring goals, not a problem, but you do not stop running for that badge, that shirt and those supporters, because you’re supposedly one of them. And what he did last night was nowhere near good enough. I know he cares but it’s not enough.”

Fellow pundit Roy Keane agreed that Rashford isn’t showing enough hunger at present. The Old Trafford legend said: “They [the United fans] are frustrated with Marcus Rashford at the moment, not for his lack of skill, [it’s] because they don’t see a player running.

“He’s a local lad, he’s had a lot of plaudits over the last few years, he’s got the mega deal, all well and good. But I always look at players, have they got desire to do well? And Marcus isn’t showing that at the moment.”
