Man Utd player ratings vs Aston Villa: Paul Pogba and Eric Bailly star as midfielder flops

Man Utd v Aston Villa: Match In Pictures

Manchester United defeated an in-form Aston Villa side at Old Trafford on Friday night to go level on points with Liverpool in the Premier League table and start 2021 in style. Bruno Fernandes inspired Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to victory as United managed a ninth straight league game unbeaten. Express Sport rates and slates the Red Devils.

Manchester United ratings vs Aston Villa

David De Gea – 7

Aston Villa didn’t threaten the Spaniard too much but what he did have to do he did well. Dean Henderson’s wait goes on.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7

Fine attacking play finishing in a perfect cross for Anthony Martial to finish late in the first half. Was out of position for the Villa equaliser in trying to block a free kick being taken.

Eric Bailly – 8

Silly booking when the whistle had already gone with a two-footed tackle which could have ended up a red in other circumstances. Was very impressive throughout though and looks like it could be hard for Victor Lindelof to return after injury.

Harry Maguire – 6

Generally solid but perhaps could have done better in stopping the ball from Jack Grealish which setup the equaliser.

Luke Shaw – 6

A threat down the left and offered a good option going forward. Clearly ahead of Alex Telles in the pecking order at the moment.

Fred – 7

Broke up the play well and looked full of energy. Limited what John McGinn and Jack Grealish could do for Villa.

Scott McTominay – 6

Looked a little out of sorts and gave the ball away sloppily on a few occasions. A far cry from his display against Leeds. Was substituted for Nemanja Matic just after an hour.

Bruno Fernandes – 7

Looked a little off the pace and in need of a rest at times. Having said that Villa did a good job of getting players around him. Clinical from the penalty spot though.

Paul Pogba – 8

Had a big influence in midfield and won the penalty for United. Will be disappointed he didn’t tap home from a Luke Shaw cross to cap a fine performance.

Marcus Rashford – 7

Lively throughout and created a number of chances for himself. Looks somewhere near his best and alongside Fernandes United always look like they can win.

Anthony Martial – 7

Gave United the lead in the first half with a cool header after fine work from Wan-Bissaka and looked a threat throughout.
