Liverpool given another defensive boost as Joe Gomez posts injury update

Liverpool: Klopp opposed to Premier League COVID break

Liverpool are currently operating without all three of their current senior options, with Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip injured. However, there has been some good news on that front, with the first two showing they are now on the road to recovery on social media.

Liverpool appear to have been given a huge boost after Joe Gomez posted an injury update on his Instagram story.

The England defender has been out of action since November when he ruptured his patella tendon while training on international duty.

But he appears to be on the path to a return after sharing a picture of himself on an exercise bike on Saturday afternoon.

Alongside the snap he wrote: “There’s beauty in the struggle”.

Little was said on Gomez’s injury by Liverpool, other than the fact he had a successful operation and he would most likely be out for most of the season.

A club statement back in November read: “The issue was isolated to Gomez’s tendon, with no damage to any other associated knee ligaments.

“The operation to correct the damage, which took place in London on Thursday morning, was a success and the 23-year-old will make a full recovery.

“Gomez will begin a rehabilitation programme with the Reds’ medical team immediately, with club staff carefully monitoring his progress.

“No timescale is being placed upon his return, though the issue is likely to rule him out for a significant part of the remainder of 2020-21.”

The news on Gomez comes shortly after a video showing Virgil van Dijk also taking to an exercise bike as the Dutchman continues his recovery.

And Klopp admitted that he was delighted to discuss a potential return for the Dutchman, insisting

“Good, very good. I have no problem with talking about Virgil van Dijk. It’s very good but still a long way to go, that’s this kind of injury,” Klopp said.

“I’m happy when I see these videos, to be honest, because it just shows that he makes good progress.

“But it will still take a lot of time, that’s how it is. I would like to say something else but these are the facts, unfortunately.”
