Matt Fitzpatrick shot a closing 66 at St Andrews to claim the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on Monday. In doing so, he also won the team event alongside his mother.

The 2022 US Open champion, playing on the back of his contributions to Europe’s Ryder Cup victory, finished 19 under par to take his second title of the year.

The tournament was shortened to 54 holes after storms wiped out play over the weekend on the three courses of St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.

He won by three strokes over Marcus Armitage, Matthew Southgate and defending champion Ryan Fox, while also taking pro-am honours with his mother, Susan.

The 29-year-old said: ‘It’s funny really, it was kind of a freewheeling week – playing with mum and just trying to see what happened. Even with all my wins, aside from a major, you forget about them in the future, and you’ll always remember the one that you won with your mum, so it doesn’t get better than that.’

The win followed Fitzpatrick’s PGA Tour success at the RBC Heritage in April, but was his first on the DP World Tour for two years.

That it was possible at all owed much to ground staff who somehow made the three courses playable after severe flooding on Saturday and Sunday.

Fitzpatrick said: ‘Winning at St Andrews is special – it’s just a very special place. We’ve been coming here for a long, long time as well, and yes, it doesn’t get better.
