PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV Golf agree shock merger

Jordan Spieth believes Jon Rahm would be a huge loss to the PGA Tour, with the Masters champion linked with a move to LIV Golf. Numerous reports have suggested Rahm is on the brink of a lucrative switch to the breakaway league over the past week.

The Spaniard making the Saudi move would prove to be one of the biggest chapters in the PGA Tour-LIV saga yet, having established himself as one of the world’s top players in recent years. The two sides are currently in talks to sign off their ongoing framework agreement, with the PGA Tour set to partner up with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF), LIV’s main beneficiary.

As things stand any deal is yet to be signed off, with doubts cast over whether an agreement will officially be made before the December 31 deadline. If Rahm’s move does go through, it remains to be seen whether the mega-money deal would bring the two rival sides closer together or further away, with both the Tour and PIF initially hoping to include a clause which would stop them poaching other players – a rule revoked by the United States Justice Department.

Tiger Woods has already offered his thoughts on any Rahm switch, and another man who hopes Rahm does remain with the American-based circuit is fellow green jacket winner Spieth. “I’m not sure specifically how it would impact those negotiations, but all in all, Jon Rahm is one of the biggest assets that we have on the PGA Tour,” Spieth said at this week’s Hero World Challenge.

“So it would really not be very good for us in general, because we want to play against the best players in the world, and that’s what Jon is. I know there’s been some guys that have talked to him. I know he’s maybe weighing some decisions, maybe not.

“I really don’t know, so I don’t want to insult him and say he’s weighing decisions if he already knows he’s not or he is. That’s somewhat out of my control, in a way. Obviously, I could speak probably on behalf of 200-plus PGA Tour players in saying that we really hope that he’s continuing with us.”
