{"id":299242,"date":"2023-11-30T11:24:35","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T11:24:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usasportsradar.com\/?p=299242"},"modified":"2023-11-30T11:24:35","modified_gmt":"2023-11-30T11:24:35","slug":"rio-ferdinand-is-made-to-eat-his-words-after-andre-onana-howlers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usasportsradar.com\/soccer\/rio-ferdinand-is-made-to-eat-his-words-after-andre-onana-howlers\/","title":{"rendered":"Rio Ferdinand is made to eat his words after Andre Onana howlers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Rio Ferdinand is made to eat his words as Andre Onana&#8217;s howlers leave Man United&#8217;s Champions League hopes hanging by a thread&#8230; days after he asked for an &#8216;apology&#8217; because of the keeper&#8217;s domestic clean sheet record<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ferdinand praised the Manchester United goalkeeper on his recent podcast\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>He was in attendance though to watch Onana&#8217;s shocking European display<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pressure is easing on Man United boss Erik ten Hag: Listen to It&#8217;s All Kicking Off<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Rio Ferdinand&#8217;s podcast &#8216;cursed&#8217; Andre Onana, it has been claimed on social media, after the Manchester United goalkeeper suffered a nightmare night in the Champions League.<\/p>\n<p>Onana made two costly mistakes allowing Galatasaray to recover twice from two-goal deficits to claim a 3-3 draw &#8211; that leaves Erik ten Hag&#8217;s side bottom of their group with one game left to play.<\/p>\n<p>United have now conceded 14 goals in five Champions League games, with Onana making a number of mistakes even before the draw with Galatasaray.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, no keeper has kept more clean sheets in the Premier League than Onana &#8211; who is joint top along with Crystal Palace&#8217;s Sam Johnstone and Newcastle&#8217;s Nick Pope.<\/p>\n<p>Ferdinand asked for an apology to Onana on a VIBE with FIVE podcast earlier this week due to his domestic clean sheet record, but had to criticise him on Wednesday night after the costly draw away in Turkey.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/30\/10\/78414085-12809087-image-m-24_1701339785007.jpg\" height=\"491\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Andre Onana made two costly mistakes in Manchester United&#8217;s draw with Galatasaray<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/30\/10\/78414093-12809087-image-a-26_1701339811493.jpg\" height=\"359\" width=\"306\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/30\/10\/78414083-12809087-image-a-27_1701339811494.jpg\" height=\"359\" width=\"306\"><\/p>\n<p>Ferdinand defended Onana on his podcast this week due to his Premier League clean sheet record, but had to criticise the keeper following his costly mistakes against Galatasaray<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>The former England captain who was a pundit for TNT Sports last night, said: &#8216;I think that the keeper today has to hold his hands up and say &#8216;yes, I was at fault for a couple of goals,&#8217; and he should do better.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the week on his podcast, he said: &#8216;Joint most clean sheets in the Premier League.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Addressing one of his co-hosts, he said: &#8216;I want an apology now. Just say sorry to the camera now because Onana actually watches the show.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>United took a 2-0 lead after goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes, before pulling one back from a Hakim Ziyech free-kick.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Red Devils restored their advantage through Scott McTominay, but Galatasaray again pulled out back after Onana fumbled another Ziyech free-kick into the net.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Onana&#8217;s positioning was also questionable for Galatasaray&#8217;s third goal, as he was beaten at his near post from a Muhammed Kerem Akturkoglu strike.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ten Hag refused to blame his keeper after the match, who was left visibly distraught after the final whistle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Man United legend Peter Schmeichel described Onana&#8217;s mistakes as &#8216;very, very expensive&#8217;\u00a0\u00a0while TNT Sport pundits also hit out at the keeper.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>@FIVEUK cursed Onana \ud83e\udd23\ud83d\ude05<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/30\/10\/78414189-12809087-image-a-38_1701339974548.jpg\" height=\"383\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Onana has struggled for United in Europe, conceding 14 goals in just five games so far<\/p>\n<p>Robbie Savage said it was a &#8216;bad error&#8217; from Onana which led to their second goal while Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves were critical of the keeper for the Turkish&#8217;s side first strike.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at half time about Ziyech&#8217;s first goal, Hargreaves said: &#8216;Onana can\u2019t see because of the two players in front. He takes a step to the left when he probably shouldn\u2019t.
