Formula E drivers teach children about electric vehicles and how to race them

Max Verstappen will be hoping to secure his 10th successive race win at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday and write himself into the history books once again. The Red Bull star’s victory in the Netherlands last weekend saw him draw level with Sebastian Vettel and Alberto Ascari with nine in a row, and the Dutchman won’t have many better chances to go one better.

Verstappen has been in sensational form this season and if the 25-year-old can continue in this rich vein of form then it is hard to see any of his rivals getting the better of him. Sergio Perez has performed valiantly throughout too and he will be hoping to return to the podium this weekend.

Similarly, Lewis Hamilton will be hoping to bounce back to form with a strong display at Monza. The Brit put pen to paper on a contract extension with Mercedes earlier this week and having a say on Sunday would crown the occasion in fitting style.

    Hamilton concerned by Williams

Lewis Hamilton claims that being surpassed by Williams and McLaren in qualifying at Monza was ‘not easy’.

The Brit was downbeat about his chances on Sunday due to the nature of the circuit and the strengths of Alex Albon, who qualified in sixth.

“What’s impressive is to see how quick Williams is,” said Hamilton. “To be leapfrogged by the Williams and the McLaren is not easy.

“I’ve just got to try and progress forward somehow tomorrow. The Williams will be almost impossible to overtake because they’re fastest in the straights. When there’s a will there’s a way.”

    Leclerc humble after quali disappointment

Charles Leclerc has admitted that he was ‘disappointed’ not to clinch pole position at Monza on Saturday.

Instead, the honour fell to his Ferrari team-mate, Carlos Sainz, as the Tifosi went wild on home turf.

“My feeling can only be amazing,” said Leclerc, who qualified third. “On my side I’m disappointed, I wanted to be P1 but very happy for Carlos and for a Ferrari P1.

“On my side I’ve been struggling a lot. The fans are just incredible! I don’t cry very often when I’m P3, it’s an amazing feeling. We’ll try and do first and second with Carlos!”

    Verstappen strikes back at Hamilton

Max Verstappen has hit back at Lewis Hamilton, who claims that the Red Bull star has not had to contend with the same calibre of team-mates over the course of his career.

Verstappen is on course for his third consecutive world title, and Sergio Perez has been his Red Bull partner for all three.

Hamilton, meanwhile, claims that the likes of Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button gave him a sterner test.

“This kind of statement… he possibly thinks he’s winning something with that, but it makes no difference to me,” said Verstappen.

“I think Mercedes have a very hard time dealing with losing, after all these years of winning so much. At some point, you have to be realistic and then you have to be able to appreciate what other teams are doing.

“We did the same when they were dominant and we also said, ‘We have to work harder because we are not good enough’.

“You can keep shouting and screaming that what we do is not that special… you just have to deal with yourself.”

    Perez downbeat after Monza P5

Sergio Perez was not quite as optimistic as his Red Bull team-mate, Max Verstappen, after qualifying fifth for Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix.

“It was not ideal,” admitted the Mexican. “We had a great Friday but today was very messy. Overall, I don’t think we maximised our day.

“With track time, we went out and had a very different setup in FP3. We went completely blind into qualifying.

“Ferrari have been looking very strong, let’s see what we’re able to do tomorrow. It’s a bit of an unknown where Ferrari stand.”

    Verstappen appears to taunt fans

Max Verstappen appeared to fire a light-hearted jab at the Ferrari fans packed in at Monza this weekend after he qualified second behind Carlos Sainz for Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix.

“We made some good improvements compared to yesterday,” said the Dutchman, who is gunning for a 10th consecutive race win. “Every qualifying session was very tight, I’m happy to be second today.”

But seemingly in the knowledge that Red Bull have unmatched race pace, and amid a smattering of boos, Verstappen added: “It’s nice to see, tomorrow we’ll try and win the race. Enjoy today!”

    Ferrari duo cleared by stewards

Ferrari stars Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz can both breathe a sigh of relief, with stewards ruling that they had not driven ‘unnecessarily slowly’ during qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix.

Both drivers were under investigation in Q1 for exceeding the maximum lap time set by race director Niels Wittich.

However, neither was punished, meaning Sainz will start on pole and Leclerc in P3 when the race gets underway on Sunday.

    Sainz seals blockbuster pole

Carlos Sainz has put his Ferrari on pole for Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix.

The Spaniard says he had ‘goosebumps’ when crossing the line in Q3, presumably in the knowledge that he had just put together a barnstorming lap.

Max Verstappen is in second place with another Ferrari star, Charles Leclerc, clinching P3 to set up an exciting grid for the team’s home race.

    Sky apologise for X-rated comment

Sky Sports presenter Simon Lazenby was forced to apologise on Saturday after Ferrari boss Frederic Vasseur swore during a live TV interview.

Vasseur spoke to the cameras shortly after the third and final practice session of the weekend.

“It’s quite emotional [at Monza],” he said. “[People say] ‘Guys, you can’t score more points in Monza than somewhere else’. But this is bulls***.

“When you arrive on Thursday morning at Monza with all the guys in red, you can feel it. You can feel the passion, the emotion. For us, we have to take it as a positive and get an extra push from this.”

A smirking Lazenby then said: “A quick apology for the language.”

Rosberg not ‘100 per cent’ convinced by Hamilton new deal

Nico Rosberg has claimed that ‘it is not 100 per cent’ that Lewis Hamilton will see out both years of his new Mercedes contract.

The Brit committed his future to the team ahead of the Italian Grand Prix this weekend, but some do not appear to be convinced by the deal that will see him through into his 40s.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 about Hamilton’s new contract, Rosberg said: “It is never done until they have put pen to paper and even then it is not 100 per cent, as we have seen in F1. I think it makes total sense for Mercedes; It is the best driver pairing out there I think.

Plus, they don’t drive into each other which is not always the case, it’s important, and they work very well together. Toto has managed to convince both of them to keep going even though it is not the best situation going car-wise.

“For Lewis, you never know though because he is 38 now. The time might come one day where he does prefer to be on the beach or something so it is not 100 per cent, but it looks like he is still enjoying himself.”

Williams chief calls for Sargeant to improve

Williams team principal James Vowles has called for Logan Sargeant to ‘earn’ his place in Formula 1 next season.

The American is yet to score a point in a Williams car, despite the vehicle improving markedly over the last 12 months.

In contrast, teammate Alex Albon has 15 points to his name and further highlighted Sargeant’s downfalls.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Vowles explained: “Alex [Albon] is here for the long-term, I can tell you that already. In terms of where Logan is, he’s on the right path to developing.

“He has to just keep stepping up race on race, but it’s more about working with him and more as we did with George [Russell] back then, less so about contracts in that circumstance.

“The comments I’ve given to him [Sargeant], is this: It’s a meritocracy, you’re not here just because we want you to be here. You have to earn your place.”

Norris opens up on injury problems

McClaren driver Lando Norris has revealed that he has had ‘lots of issues’ with his back since Formula 1 moved to running ground-effect cars in the 2022 championship.

The changes made meant that drivers are closer to the ground to generate downforce levels, and in turn has prompted conversations about the implication it has had on those in the car.

Asked about whether softer rides could be introduced further down the line, Norris welcomed the ideal, explaining: “I wouldn’t say no, if we could have softer cars or something that makes it a bit more like it was in 2019, 2020, 2021.

“I’ve struggled a lot with my back. I’ve had to make quite a few seats and do a lot more training just to try and strengthen my back, my lower back.

“I’ve had a lot of issues over the last 12 months or so. Similar to Carlos [Sainz]. I guess everyone’s had different things and struggles with different bits and cars are different and whatever. A bit of it including the car and how stiff it is. I’ve struggled quite a bit.”

    Verstappen lashes out at criticism

Max Verstappen has hit back at his critics as he looks to secure a record-breaking 10th race win in a row at the Italian Grand Prix.

The Dutchman’s dominance has come under fire from both spectators and the Red Bull star’s rivals, with some feeling that his stranglehold on the sport is making for a less entertaining spectacle.

Verstappen does not share the same view though, telling PA: “Verstappen said of his critics: “They cannot appreciate dominance or just people executing their jobs.

“It is nothing really new in Formula 1, and I cannot do much with those kinds of comments. Does it bother me? No. It would probably be worse if they were talking about other stuff. I am enjoying what I am doing and I hope I can do it for a while.

“I don’t want it to stop. We have another good opportunity this weekend. I believe I can win every single race.”

    Sainz plays down Ferrari hopes

Carlos Sainz has played down his chances of victory in the Italian Grand Prix this weekend, despite being the quickest in Friday’s FP2 session.

Instead, the Spaniard still feels that Red Bull’s long-run pace will prove decisive on Sunday.

He explained: “Dreaming is for free, no? This is one of my favourite sayings. I think we can all dream and it’s for free, no one can it take away from us.

“But being realistic, also looking at our race pace, that’s when we start to see the true pace of the Red Bull again.

“They were clearly again three-tenths of a second ahead in race pace and over 50 laps that’s a lot of lap time.”

    Perez makes Red Bull admission

Sergio Perez has admitted that he hasn’t adapted quickly to Red Bull’s new upgrades.

His admission comes after his nightmare crash during Italian GP practice. He has come under-fire for his below-par performances, while Max Verstappen continues to dominate.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s race, Perez told motorsport.com: “Sometimes you will put a part on it and you will straight away go faster with it. Sometimes you will have to adapt to it.

“I haven’t been able to adapt as quickly as I should and I had to change my driving style a bit to adapt into the car more than in the beginning of the season, for example, when things were coming more naturally.”

“Sometimes you will put a part on it and you will straight away go faster with it. Sometimes you will have to adapt to it.

“I haven’t been able to adapt as quickly as I should and I had to change my driving style a bit to adapt into the car more than in the beginning of the season, for example, when things were coming more naturally.”

Red Bull punished for Verstappen speeding

Red Bull have been fined after Max Verstappen was caught speeding in the pit lane in Monza.

A limit of 80kph was enforced during practice on Friday which all drivers were warned of prior. Verstappen was caught by sensors travelling at 84.8kph during the second practice session, and the stewards wasted no time in clamping down on the matter.

Red Bull were fined £428 in total as a result, with the usual £84.60 per kph rule being enforced to ensure that all punishments are not up for debate. Verstappen will not face a sporting punishment as it was only a practice session.

    Massa banned from Italian GP

Felipe Massa has been banned from the Italian Grand Prix this weekend after his legal team called for their client to be paid damages for the 2008 Formula One World Championship.

The Brazilian driver is still angry about the result and was set to travel to Italy this weekend but received a phone call from someone at Formula One telling him not to attend.

“Massa had already bought a flight ticket and received a call from the high ranking of Formula 1 on Monday, asking him not to go to Monza,” Massa’s spokesman told Motorsport.com.

Massa’s legal team alerted the FIA and FOM of their intentions regarding the 2008 season earlier this week by naming a lawsuit in the British High Court, providing a deadline that to heap pressure on the organisations.
