UFC fight cancelled after scary weigh-in leaves female fighter looking ‘weak’

A UFC fight was cancelled by officials over health concerns for one of the fighters who looked "like a corpse" while shaking badly at the pre-bout weigh-in.

Bantamweight MMA fighter Aspen Ladd was due to fight Macy Chiasson at UFC Vegas 38 tonight, an event headlined by Thiago Santos' clash with Johnny Walker.

But worrying footage of the weigh-in showed Ladd visibly shaking behind a modesty board, as she tried to make the 135lb weight limit after first coming in at 141.5lbs.

Several MMA commentators noticed the trembling, which is usually the sign of a dramatic weight loss before a fight to make sure a competitor weighs under the maximum threshold for the class.

Many quickly called for the fight to be scrapped with Ladd seemingly in no fit condition to take part.

"Aspen Ladd should not fight tomorrow," pundit Ariel Helwani wrote on Twitter. "That was extremely troubling. Common sense has to prevail here."

"She looked like a corpse up there," he added.

Aaron Bronsteter said the fighter was stood on the scales "for 3-4 minutes" and the best she could manage was 137lbs – still above the threshold for the bout with Chiasson.

UFC officials did scrap the fight – the second aborted bout between the pair after Chiasson picked up an injury the day before the weight-in for a fight scheduled in July.

Afterwards, Ladd posted on Instagram to take responsibility for the cancellation of the fight and explain why she had looked so fragile on the scales.

"Fight is off. Again. All my fault," Ladd admitted.

"Straight up started my period two days back and made this cut absolutely miserable. Did the best I could, hit 137, the scale situation was a mess because the last thing I wanted was to bleed in front of the media.

"The fight wasn’t pulled, my opponent then decided she would rather not go through with it, as is her right. I’m going to get slammed regardless, so let it begin."

The decision to cancel the bout was perhaps informed by the previous occasion Ladd struggled to make the weight, when she looked similarly shaky ahead of a meeting with Germaine de Randamie in 2019.

That fight was allowed to go ahead, but it took just 16 seconds for Ladd to be knocked out by her opponent – the Californian's only UFC defeat to date.

The rest of the UFC Vegas 38 schedule will go ahead this evening, with Thiago Santos weighing in one-and-a-half pounds heavier than his headliner opponent Johnny Walker.
