Punter loses $35k after ‘monster upset’

American MMA fighter Shana Dobson has pulled off a miracle, defeating flyweight rival Mariya Agapova in a major UFC upset.

Before Sunday’s bout in Las Vegas, Dobson was yet to record a UFC victory in three encounters, and was touted as an unlikely underdog — Agapova was a staggering -1400 favourite in the fight.

The first round had a bit of back-and-forth, but the 31-year-old shocked the UFC world by claiming a TKO win in the second round, earning her Performance of the Night.

The referee was forced to end the fight after Dobson delivered a series of blows to Agapova’s head. Agapova was coming off three consecutive victories in the Octagon. The Kazakhstan fighter was reportedly taken out of the cage on a stretcher.

ESPN reporter Marc Raimondi posted: “Upset city! Dobson with a monster upset over Agapova. She finishes by TKO. Historically big upset.”

MMA Junkie reporter Danny Segura tweeted: “Agapova’s pace is just not sustainable beyond 5 minutes. Huge mistake. Also, props to Dobson. Dealing with Agapova’s pressure and pace in the first round is not an easy thing to do.”

According to ESPN, Dobson’s win is the biggest upset in the UFC since Holly Holm shocked Rona Rousey at UFC 193 in 2015.

One punter reportedly lost US$25,000 (AU$34,906) after betting on the heavy favourite — the bet would have netted $1775 if Agapova emerged the victor.

“We saw this coming,” Dobson said in her post-fight interview.

“We’re excited, but we’re not surprised. We expected to get this dub, no matter how we were going to get it.”

MMA reporter Scott Fontana pondered on Twitter: “Not taking away from Dobson’s win, because it was fair. But did it seem to anyone else that she went completely unpunished for heavy shots to the back of Agapova’s head during the final push? Not like Agapova was moving around and it was incidental. Just reckless.

“And if I had put the mortgage on Dobson, I’d be a multi-millionaire.”

UFC fighter Angela Hill tweeted: “F**k yeah, told y’all this girl was hyped. Good job Shana Dobson!”

Dana White had doubts about a 3-4 fighter (Dobson) being matched up with a 9-1 fighter (Agapova).

White said "don't make us look like Top Rank"

Maynard said that he liked Dobson to win the fight when they booked it.
