‘Classless jerk’: Sledge goes too far
Colby Covington’s devastating win over Robbie Lawler at UFC Fight Night in Newark demanded a title fight — but then he opened his mouth.
The loudmouth fighter is on a tear in the UFC welterweight division, 10 fights and 10 victories since first joining the UFC — but there’s a very clear reason he hasn’t been getting the big fights or selling big pay-per-views.
It was painfully obvious as he made Lawler look out of his depth on the way to a unanimous judges decision victory in a main event fight where none of the three judges awarded Lawler a single round.

But, just as he’s done countless times before, Covington tainted his victory when handed the microphone.
While speaking to the Newark crowd, Covington took aim at Lawler and his close friend Matt Hughes, a member of the UFC Hall of Fame.
Covington took a shot at Lawler by mocking Hughes’ car crash from 2017 where the fighter was left with a traumatic brain injury after his car made contact with a moving train.
“Let’s talk about the lesson that we learned tonight,” Covington said to the crowd.
Colby Covington with a statement win against Robbie Lawler! ?
"Don't matter if this is the Trump Train or the Colby Train, get out of the way!"

“It’s a strong lesson that Robbie should have learned from his good buddy Matt Hughes. You stay off the tracks when the train is coming through, junior. Doesn’t matter if it’s the (Donald) Trump train or the Colby train, get out the way.”
The comments attracted widespread condemnation across the UFC community.
For 25 minutes I found myself liking Colby Covington. He was magnificent.
Then they gave him a microphone and he reminded me of my true feelings towards him
That Matt Hughes line Colby Covington just dropped was really rough. Wonder how that’s going to fly with Dana White. #UFCNewark
UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes suffered serious brain injuries when his truck was hit by a train. Colby Covington just defeated Hughes' friend Robbie Lawler and used that accident as fuel for post-fight trash talk. What a classless jerk Covington is. https://t.co/Gu1xuabvpH
And the act is cool until he says what he did about Matt Hughes
Despite the outrage surrounding the victory speech, both Lawler and Hughes refused to bite back at the taunt.
“Guys are crossing the line, it seems like the media eat it up,” Lawler said after the fight.
“That’s for you guys to write about and for you guys to make up your own minds about it.”
Hughes also went on Instagram to accept that every fighter needs to have thick skin when they are in the business of selling fights.
“Not sure if @colbycovmma should have use my accident as fuel for his post-fight trash talk, but that was one heck of a fight,” Hughes posted.
“Nice win for @americantopteam, and @ruthless_rl always puts on a good fight. Reminder though, this is the fighting world. People trash talk and you gotta have thick skin.”
Meanwhile, Donald Trump Jr and the President of the United States’ brother Eric Trump were both in attendance for the fight
Former interim UFC welterweight champion Covington, 31, celebrated that belt win with a trip to the White House last year.
He wore a Make America Great Again baseball cap and smiled alongside Trump before joining Donald Jr on a visit to Trump Tower in May.
The POTUS even wished him luck before the five-round demolition of Lawler.
According to reports, Covington also took a phone call from Trump while conducting interviews with TV cameras after the fight.
Fight hard tonight Colby. You are a real Champ! #MAGA https://t.co/dj3JlWQu7i
