Rafael Nadal blows up at journalist over 'bulls**t' question after defeat
Rafael Nadal had a run-in with a journalist after his ATP Finals defeat to Alexander Zverev on Monday evening, rubbishing the bizarre suggestion his recent marriage affected his performance.
The Spaniard is in danger of losing the world number one spot after going down 6-2 6-4 against Zverev in London, and now needs to beat Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas to make the semi-finals.
Nadal had been struggling with a stomach injury going into the tournament, though he played down the impact of the problem at a press conference after the match.
When it was put to him by Italian journalist Ubaldo Scanagatta that his recent marriage to long-term girlfriend Xisca Perello may have played a part in the loss too, Nadal snapped back.
Here’s the exchange in full…
Journalist: ‘Tonight you were playing very short many times. I don’t know why, because you’re not used to that. I’d like to know, for many people to get married is a very important distracted thing before the marriage, during the marriage, after the marriage. I’d like to know if somehow your concentration on tennis life has been a bit different even if you were going out with the same girl for many, many years.’
NADAL: ‘Honestly, are you asking me this? Is a serious question or is a joke? Is it serious?’
Journalist: ‘It’s serious. (Off microphone.) Is not something that…’
NADAL: ‘Okay. I’m surprised, it’s a big surprise for me you ask me this after I have been with the same girl for 15 years and having a very stable and normal life.
‘Doesn’t matter if you put a ring on your finger or not. In my personal way, I am a very normal guy.
‘Maybe for you was — how many years you have been with your…’
Journalist: ‘Wife 30 years this year.’
NADAL: ‘And before? Ah, maybe before you were not sure. That’s why (smiling). Okay.
‘Okay. We move to Spanish, because that’s bulls**t. Thank you very much.’
At this point Nadal ended the English part of the press conference and switched over to Spanish, shaking his head in disbelief at the line of questioning he had just been subjected to.
