Nick Kyrgios has claimed he would have been able to perform a lot better on the court in his younger days if he wasn’t so ‘sexually frustrated’. The controversial Australian labelled this as was one of the reasons why he was often unable to show his true ability, with his mind elsewhere while he was supposed to be focussed upon his tennis.

Before the coronavirus pandemic impacted the tour, the 26-year-old would, like all his fellow professionals, spend much of the year globetrotting to take part in different competitions.

Tennis players struggling after spending so much time away from home is nothing new – it’s understandable that they would miss their loved ones while away competing.

But Kyrgios was very specific when describing exactly what it was he missed the most while travelling for his tennis career.

“With my first girlfriend, I was away from her for six months at a time,” he explained in an interview with News.AU.

“When you’re trying to perform at the highest level, you start missing someone like emotionally, physically and it becomes a sexual frustration.

“I’m on court and I can’t play because I’m a bit horny, if you know what I mean.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re in an office job – if you’re not seeing your significant other, it affects you, your work, your mood, everything.

“I was the moodiest motherf***** when I was away from my missus for that long.”

Those frustrations may have contributed to the Aussie’s complicated love life, with several girlfriends having come and gone over the years.

For a while he was in a relationship with fellow tennis pro Ajla Tomljanovic, who is now dating Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini.

Kyrgios then started seeing Russian star Anna Kalinskaya, until their split in early 2020.

The 26-year-old may have decided to move away from dating other tennis players, as he was involved in an on-and-off relationship with social media star Chiara Passari.

And that arrangement now seems to have come to an end, after a well-publicised argument in quarantine last month which ended when police were called to their hotel.

It’s not just his love life that has been affected – Kyrgios says his bond with his family was tested by all the travelling, and that it has improved after skipping most of the last two seasons.

“My relationship with my family wasn’t great a few years ago because I was always away and didn’t have my family around me,” the Australian added.

“I was winning, losing, going through relationship problems, dealing with other problems and I was pushing them away because you feel like the world’s against you.

“I pushed everyone who was close to me away and I fell out with people and that’s something I’d never want again.

“That’s why tennis is so hard, in my opinion. The mental game is ridiculous.

“Physically, you have to be an absolute animal. What other sport do you have to play for three-plus hours, possibly seven times in two weeks? It doesn’t happen.

“I’m pretty sure that’s why I lost my f***ing marbles.”
