Wrexham complete deal for ex-Premier League ace after deadline day bids fail

Welcome to Wrexham season 2 official trailer

Former Premier League striker Steven Fletcher has signed for Wrexham on a free transfer after agreeing to part ways with Dundee United. The move comes after the club failed to secure a deal for Harrogate Town forward Luke Armstrong on deadline day.

Fletcher brings some much needed experience into the Wrexham front-line with star striker Paul Mullin out with an injury. Mullin, who was the club’s top scorer last season with 46 goals, was involved in a collision with former Manchester United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop in preseason and suffered a punctured lung.

The Scottish striker joins the Welsh team, which is owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, having made 189 Premier League appearances in his career – scoring 53 goals. The 36-year-old enjoyed spells at a number of clubs including Sunderland, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City.

Despite his vast experience Fletched wasn’t the club’s first choice in the summer transfer window. Harrogate Town’s Luke Armstrong was due to sign for Wrexham on deadline day for a £500,000 club record fee, but saw the move fail to materialise after the relevant documentation hadn’t been completed in time for the 11 pm cut-off.

Fletcher is likely to line up alongside regular Wrexham forward Ollie Palmer and believes that he is well-suited to the club’s ambitions. “Hopefully I can bring a lot of experience,” Fletcher said after signing.

“I’m 36, I’m still fit and still raring to go. One of the biggest selling points was the ambition of the Club, and if I can help with that then great.

“I don’t think you can not see what has been happening at Wrexham – it’s been a great experience for the fans, players and owners so hopefully we can continue that.”

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has also expressed his delight with the transfer, adding: “I’m really pleased with the addition of Steve to the squad. He’s missed football through pre-season but he’s trained today with the lads and it’s good to have him on board.

“His pedigree speaks for itself, and he’s played most of his career at a very high level. He’s an excellent professional and that’s really important to fit in with the group here.”

Phil Parkinson’s team faces Doncaster in League Two next on Saturday.
