‘Think about what United offered today in attack: zilch, zero, nothing,’ Souness said in the Sky Sports studio.

‘What did they offer? It was very disappointing and if you’re a United supporter that must have been such a hard watch.’

Even ardent United fan and club legend Gary Neville could not disagree with Souness’ assessment, and conceded a huge gulf in class now exists between the two clubs.

‘City isn’t United’s problem at the moment, it’s how they get closer to the other teams. City at the minute are just on a different level.’
