Manchester United are reportedly looking to sign Borussia Monchengladbach star Denis Zakaria this month – but are yet to submit a formal bid for the midfielder.
The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old, whose current deal at the Bundesliga club is set to expire at the end of the season.
While United are free to enter pre-contract negotiations with Zakaria now, they may look to test Gladbach’s resolve and bring him in during the January window, accroding to Fabrizio Romano.

With Zakaria showing no signs of putting pen to paper on a new extension, Gladbach could reportedly be ready to sell him if a suitable offer comes in, rather than lose him for nothing in June.
The Mirror reported last week that the cash-strapped German club could be willing to accept a £25million offer for one of the league’s most highly-rated midfielders but Romano has claimed that United are yet to follow up on their keen interest.
The Italian journalist and transfer specialist has also claimed that more than four other clubs are preparing to sign him in the summer when his contract at Borussia-Park expires.
United are reportedly facing stiff competition from the likes of rivals Liverpool while there is also interest from across the continent, with Bayern Munich, Juventus and Barcelona all linked.
However, United face competition from Liverpool and others for the Swiss midfielder
Ralf Rangnick has struggled to impose his philosophy on the side since taking the position of interim head coach in November and is now looking to the market to bolster parts of his squad, with midfield being a key area the German is looking at.
United had been unbeaten during the start to his tenure but had delivered a number of unconvincing displays, including a 1-1 draw with Young Boys in the Champions League and a point at a languishing Newcastle before the turn of the year.
Rangnick is now desperate to find balance in the squad after discovering that most of the squad are failing to buy into his ideas at such an early stage.
