Transfer-mad Chelsea ‘closing in’ on another Arsenal target after Mudryk hijack

Transfer-mad Chelsea are reportedly close to striking a deal for Arsenal target Dominik Szoboszlai.

The deep-pocketed Blues have already splashed out over £500million on transfers since Todd Boehly's £4.25billion takeover, hijacking Premier League rivals left, right and centre to complete their transfer business.

In the summer, the west Londoners swooped in at the last minute to convince Marc Cucurella to dismiss Manchester City in favour of Stamford Bridge and employed a similar philosophy in January when purchasing Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Having constantly flirted with a move to Arsenal throughout the window, the Ukrainian winger was set to join the league leaders in an £85m switch with personal terms even agreed.

However, the deal fell through when Chelsea swooped in to gazump their London rivals at the 11th hour and Mudryk instead penned an eight-and-a-half-year contract with Graham Potter's side. Arsenal then turned to sign secondary target Leandro Trossard, forking out £27m to land the Belgian international from Brighton.

Now it seems events could be repeated in the summer transfer window as Chelsea look to cement a breakthrough for Dominik Szoboszlai. According to American outlet CBS Sports, Technical Director Christopher Vivell is pushing heavily for the Blues to sign the RB Leipzig midfielder and it's understood that the parties are close to finalising an agreement.

Szoboszlai was a priority target for Mikel Arteta during the behind-closed-doors 2020/21 campaign and considered triggering his £23m release clause in the early weeks of the winter transfer period, whilst he was at RB Salzburg. Instead, the silky playmaker stayed within the RB franchise by moving across the border to Leipzig, where he has since registered 10 goals and 16 assists in 52 appearances.

Lying a lowly tenth in the Premier League table, Boehly is expected to dig deep and provide further finances for Potter when the transfer window re-opens in June.

Not satisfied with the cool £300million Thomas Tuchel frivolously exhausted in the summer, Boehly equipped the former Brighton boss with a winter war chest in the January transfer window, landing eight new players, including the British record-breaking transfer of £107m for Enzo Fernandez.
