Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo has asked director of football Fabio Paratici to pursue a move for Sporting midfielder Joao Palhinha before the transfer window slams shut, according to reports. The north London outfit have already enjoyed a fruitful summer window with Paratici at the wheel as they gear up for a renewed assault on the Premier League’s upper reaches.
Spurs kicked off their business last month with the signings of winger Bryan Gil and goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, the latter joining on a season-long loan deal from Atalanta.
The pair were quickly followed by Gollini’s team-mate Cristian Romero, who sealed a temporary switch of his own with Spurs retaining the option to buy for £42.5million next summer.
Despite Paratici moving quickly to bring in all three players before the start of the new Premier League season, the window appears to be far from over at Spurs.
They are also believed to be targeting the additions of a new striker and a top-class midfielder in order to strengthen their hopes of ending their long and painful wait for a major trophy.
Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez is said to be a target at the top of the pitch, while it seems as though Palhinha has been identified as their best solution in the middle of the park.

The 26-year-old played a crucial role in Sporting’s recent Primeira Liga triumph and was rewarded for his efforts with a place in the Portugal squad for Euro 2020.
Nuno is a long-term admirer of the playmaker and has moved to sanction an approach for his services, according to A Bola.
The report claims that Palhinha has been on Tottenham’s radar since last season but is particularly revered by the club’s new boss.
He is understood to be a priority target after establishing himself as one of Sporting’s most important players over the course of last season.
Palhinha signed a new contract with the club in October that includes a release clause of £50m, but a lower fee would reportedly suffice if Paratici decides to haggle.
Nuno launched an attempt to land the midfielder during his time in charge of Wolves, but the west Midlands club were ultimately unsuccessful in their bid to bring him to Molineux.
However, it seems as though a move could finally be on the cards, with Tottenham expected to step up their interest over the coming weeks.
Wolves are still believed to be keen on Palhinha, but the prospect of European football with Spurs could swing proceedings in Nuno’s favour if the player is faced with a choice between the two Premier League rivals.
Everton, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla have previously been linked with his services, but Tottenham appear to be the frontrunners as things stand.

Nuno recently declared that he is looking to make further improvements to his squad before this month’s transfer deadline, insisting that Spurs are hard at work behind closed doors.
“Anything can happen in football, it happens so fast,” the 47-year-old told reporters.
“This transfer window has been different because of the Euros, because of the struggles of the pandemic, all these things have delayed things.
“Us as a club are aware and working on a daily basis because we have to be ready on a daily basis to react if it’s necessary.
“Improving our squad is not an easy job and we have to be really accurate and clinical on who we bring.”
