Steven Gerrard’s subtle reaction to Man Utd boo boys will please Liverpool fans

Steven Gerrard's subtle reaction to being jeered by Manchester United fans will please supporters of arch-rivals Liverpool.

Now managing Aston Villa, the former Reds star returned to a chorus of boos at Old Trafford in Monday evening's FA Cup third-round tie.

A Scott McTominay header condemned the Villains to defeat but the away side dominated large parts of proceedings and had two goals disallowed for offside during the contest.

Only a lengthy VAR check prevented the game from heading to extra-time with Michael Oliver taking three minutes and 36 seconds to chalk off Danny Ings' second-half equaliser.

The following decision though was far more simple as Ings had blatantly strayed offside in the build-up to Ollie Watkins prodding the ball home from close range.

Despite being dumped out of the Cup, Villa received huge plaudits for a superb second-half display, dominating possession and making a multi-million pound Man Utd side look average.

And it wasn't just the players that were praised for their boldness.

When emerging from the tunnel, just before kick-off, Gerrard's appearance was met with a cauldron of noise due to his past ties with public enemy no.1 Liverpool.

The Villa boss captained the Reds for over a decade and won seven major trophies during his career, including a famous Champions League victory over AC Milan in 2005.

Making his first outing in the Old Trafford dugout, Gerrard was forced to endure a torrent of jeers and whistles as he took his seat, but the 41-year-old clearly wasn't fazed by the heckling.

Placing his chewing gum in his mouth, the former Liverpool star turned to face the Stretford End and walked coolly backward to meet the booing head-on.

Not allowing himself to smile, Gerrard soaked up the damning reception for a mere few seconds before returning to walk forwards.

And the Villa boss also chose to have a cheeky jibe about the booing when quizzed by the BBC after the game.

"Relatively quiet! I have been to noisier stadiums than this," said Gerrard, when asked on the hostile welcoming.

"It was a good cup tie, a good atmosphere but in terms of what I got, water off a duck's back."

Man United will now welcome an in-form Middlesbrough to the Theatre of Dreams, in the fourth round of the competition, with Chris Wilder's side having won six of their past seven matches.
