Southampton vs Newcastle LIVE: Latest score, goals and updates from Premier League fixture tonight

Southampton host Newcastle in a game between two of the form teams in the Premier League.

Saints are five games unbeaten entering the contest and sit fifth, knowing a win will take them top of the table and level on points with leaders Liverpool, but with a superior goal difference.

While Steve Bruce continues to defy expectations with the Magpies, who took a valuable point at Wolves before beating Everton – catch all the live updates from St Mary’s, plus updates from the early kick-off between Brighton and Burnley below:

45+1 mins: Half time. Southampton go into the break with a goal advantage. They’ve deserved it and the strike was a beauty from Che Adams. Newcastle have had their moments but have been lacking in the final third. Despite that they’re still in this game.

All to play for in the second half.

45 mins: Fernandez is shown a yellow card after Lewis is caught on the ball by Walcott. Walcott breaks towards the box and Fernandez takes him down.

Ward-Prowse whips the free kick into the area and Darlow punches it away.

42 mins: Close! Very close form Theo Walcott. James Ward-Prowse slips the ball to Oriol Romeu and he does a fancy flick to move the ball up to Walcott. He cuts inside the box and curls a shot wide of the post!

39 mins: Newcastle have shown signs that they can trouble Southampton. They’re being rewarded down the right against Stephens but Saint-Maximin hasn’t seen nearly enough of the ball to make a big impact. Yet.

36 mins: Stuart Armstrong has been bossing the midfield for Southampton. Winning aerial balls and slotting passes in behind the defence. It’s been a strong performance from him so far.

Ward-Prowse drives forward with the ball and picks out Walcott. He chips the ball into the area but it’s dealt with easily by Schar.

30 mins: Theo Walcott has been directly involved in more Premier League goals against Newcastle than any other opponent in his career. He has five goals and six assists against them.

27 mins: Oriol Romeu goes in the book for hacking down Allan Saint-Maximin. Jack Stephens plays the ball into Che Adams, who turns and has a shot blocked in the Newcastle box. The rebound bounces out to Saint-Maximin who bursts forward on the break and Romeu takes him out on the halfway line.

24 mins: Almiron throws himself into a scrap with Armstrong in the middle of the pitch. He wins the ball off the Southampton man and then draws the foul. He’s trying hard to make up for his mistake that lead to the opening goal.

21 mins: Newcastle beat the Southampton press and can attack the back line. Lewis crosses it in from the left and Stephens is their to head it out of the box. The visitors regain possession and work it back out to Lewis. He puts in another cross and Longstaff meets it with a header straight at McCarthy.
