Roy Keane has joked that Cristiano Ronaldo’s expression of shock in Portugal’s win against Ghana was due to the star hearing that Newcastle want to sign him.

Ronaldo is a free agent following his acrimonious departure from Manchester United and there has been much speculation about his future, including suggestions that Newcastle could be interested.

Manchester United legend Keane couldn’t help but joke about the situation.

Speaking on ITV Sport, Keane said: ‘Look at Ronaldo’s face, my goodness. Honestly, he’s just had a call Newcastle are in for him.’

Ronaldo, who was sitting on the bench after being substituted, was actually reacting to an error from Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa which, thankfully for his side, didn’t prove costly.

Costa put the ball down and was unaware that Ghana’s Inaki Williams was behind him. Williams ended up slipping, with his effort being cleared off the line.

Portugal ran out 3-2 winners, with Ronaldo opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the 65th minute.

Andre Ayew equalised for Ghana but goals from Joao Felix and Rafael Leao put Portugal in the ascendancy. Osman Bukhari got a goal back late on for Ghana before Williams’ miss late on.

Despite the fact that he is without a club at present, Ronaldo continues to be a hugely important player for Portugal.

Following his goal against Ghana the 37-year-old became the only player to score at five World Cups.

Ronaldo’s departure from United was officially confirmed on Tuesday but he will wait until after the World Cup to make a decision on his future.

It was a frustrating first half of the season for Ronaldo, who found himself out of favour at United under Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo was heavily critical of United, ten Hag and the club’s owners the Glazers during an interview with Piers Morgan.

Speaking about ten Hag, Ronaldo said: ‘I have no respect for him [Ten Hag] because he doesn’t show respect for me.

‘Some people, they don’t want me here – not only the coach but the other two or three guys. Not only this year, but last year too.

‘Honestly, I shouldn’t say that. But listen, I don’t care. People should listen to the truth. Yes, I feel betrayed.’

Ronaldo added that nothing has changed at United since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure.

He said: ‘Since Sir Alex Ferguson left I saw no evolution in the club, the progress was zero.

‘Nothing changed. Not only the pool, the jacuzzi, even the gym. They stopped in time, which surprised me a lot.

‘I think the fans should know the truth. I want the best for the club. But you have some things inside [the club] that don’t help reach the top level as City, Liverpool and even now Arsenal.’
