- Rousuad wants to persuade him to stay by signing the best young talent around
Barcelona presidential candidate Emili Rousaud says Lionel Messi will need to take a wage cut in order to stay at the club, but he’s confident the side can build around the Argentine.
Messi is in to the final six months of his contract, which has fuelled doubts over his future at the club, but Rousaud pledges to do everything he can to keep the 33-year-old at the club if he’s elected.
Rousaud is in competition with Joan Laporta and Victor Font, amongst others, to secure the presidency when the decision is announced on the 24th of January, and keeping Messi is central to their plans.
Lionel Messi continues to be linked with a move away, and his contract runs out in six months
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner tried to leave the club ahead of this season over a public fall-out with former president Josep Maria Bartomeu, and now he’s free to discuss end-of-season talks with his contract coming to an end.
He continues to be linked with a move away from the club with Manchester City and PSG keen to bring him in, but Rousaud insists that Messi can be persuaded to remain at Barcelona.
‘He did not want to leave the club for economic reasons. It was down to the lack of a sports project,’ Rousaud told Sport.
‘I will look him in the eyes and say: “Your salary is unsustainable, the club cannot pay you. But we are going to launch a project to surround you with young talent.”’

And the young talent Rousaud could be referring to is the likes of Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland and PSG’s frontman Kylian Mbappe.
Despite the financial concerns that could lead to a pay-cut for Messi, Rousaud is confident of the club acquiring the world’s best young stars.
‘My advisor Josep Maria Minguella has spoken with [Haaland’s agent] Mino Raiola to find out the conditions in which he would come and we have started talking,’ Rousaud said.
‘For a player like him, being in a club like ours would give him a great showcase worldwide.’
