Ronald Koeman fends off PSG's interest in Barcelona's Lionel Messi
Ronald Koeman fends off PSG’s interest in Lionel Messi and insists links do not worry him… as Barcelona boss urges Argentine legend to finish his career at LaLiga side
- Reports in Argentina this week suggested PSG has offered Lionel Messi a deal
- The contract was said to be ‘unbeatable’ and would see him take the No 10 shirt
- But Ronald Koeman insists he is not worried by the speculation around Messi
- The Dutchman did urge Messi to see out the rest of his career at Barcelona
Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman insists he is not worried about reports linking Lionel Messi with a move to Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
Reports in Argentina earlier this week claimed the 33-year-old Argentine – who is out of contract at Camp Nou in June – has been offered an ‘unbeatable’ three-year contract by the French side.
The outlet claimed Messi would also be offered the No 10 shirt, currently worn by former team-mate Neymar.

Reports suggested Nasser Al-Khelaifi’s PSG had offered Messi an ‘unbeatable’ three-year deal
But speaking ahead of Barcelona’s LaLiga game against Granada on Thursday, Koeman dismissed the rumours and urged Messi to spend the rest of his career at his current club.
‘I’m not interested in PSG, I don’t know if it’s true,’ Koeman said regarding the rumours.
‘I hope he stays with us. For me, he should finish here because he’s spent his whole life here, but ultimately it’s a decision that he will have to make.
‘It doesn’t worry me at all, I’m just focused on winning tomorrow.’
The reports in Argentina also suggested Messi would be handed Neymar’s No 10 shirt
Koeman therefore joins several figures at Barcelona that are confident that Messi wants to stay at the Camp Nou, despite his contract having little over eight more weeks left on it.
Speaking after Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final earlier this month, Laporta said: ‘I’m convinced that he wants to stay. This is his club.
‘He gave an exhibition today (in the final) and what’s more he’s surrounded by a great team. We will do everything in our power to make sure he stays.’
Antoine Griezmann, Messi’s striker partner at Barcelona, added: ‘Messi is happy here. What happens in the summer is not in our hands. He will decide.’
Meanwhile, defender Jordi Alba added: ‘It’s his decision and he’ll take it when he wants. But this is the club of his life and he’s very happy here. I hope he stays but it’s his decision.’
But Koeman has now joined president Joan Laporta (left) in having confidence he will stay
Messi has already lifted the Copa del Rey trophy this season after the Catalan giants beat Athletic Bilbao in the final earlier this month.
They are now in contention to win LaLiga too and will go top of the table ahead of Atletico Madrid if they beat the Andalusian side on home soil, but Koeman admits they are not thinking too far ahead.
‘Perhaps we are now the favourites, but we’re not thinking like that,’ he said. ‘We know how difficult it is to win games, there are no easy games.
‘The team has learned to take it game by game, it’s the best way.’
Jordi Alba and Antoine Griezmann have also recently been optimistic about Messi staying
