Romelu Lukaku will follow Antonio Conte to whichever club he manages next, reckons former West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop. Lukaku has thrived under Conte in his two seasons at Inter Milan. However, the Italian manager is now reportedly close to becoming the new head coach at Tottenham after resigning from his role with Inter last week.

Lukaku has scored 64 goals in 95 appearances under Conte with Inter.

Conte took the Belgian to Serie A in the summer of 2019 after he fell out of favour at Manchester United.

Conte first wanted to sign Lukaku in 2017 when he was Chelsea boss but United snuck in at the last minute to seal a deal.

Speaking earlier this week, before news of Conte’s advanced talks to takeover at Tottenham, Hislop said there will be a desire from Lukaku to work with Conte again.

“I will say that Romelu Lukaku will go wherever Antonio Conte goes,” Hislop told ESPN FC’s online channel.

“If come August Antonio Conte isn’t in a full-time position, Lukaku stays at Inter until he is and until the transfer window opens up, that allows those starts to again realign.

“So we can speculate about Romelu Lukaku all we like, and I think there will be no shortage of suitors this summer.

“But ultimately Lukaku will want to go back with Antonio Conte where Conte got so much out of him and Lukaku has been totally transformed as a player, both on the field, how he’s received, and how the press and the media speaks about him.

“Everything about Lukaku over the past couple of years I think has been down to that partnership with Antonio Conte. He’ll want to renew that.

“Wherever Conte goes, Lukaku’s going.”

Spurs could be in the market for a striker after Harry Kane told the club he wants to leave this summer.

Later on the same day, Hislop relayed his theory on the full ESPN FC programme.

When asked about Lukaku’s future, Hislop said: “I see him following Antonio Conte. As of right now, we’re not sure where Antonio Conte ends up.

“We expect there to be a managerial merry-go-round this summer and Lukaku finds himself wherever Antonio Conte does.

“If Conte is still out of a job come September 1 at the close of the transfer window, I think Lukaku just stays at Inter Milan.”

Inter have announced the appointment of Simone Inzaghi as Conte’s replacement.

Before the announcement, Lukaku said he would be staying with the Serie A club.

“Yes, I am staying. I feel good at Inter,” Lukaku told VTM.

“I’ve already had contact with the man who normally becomes our new manager.

“Maybe I shouldn’t say that yet … but it was a very positive conversation. There’s also the challenge of doing it again [winning the league].”
