Rio Ferdinand urges Chelsea and Liverpool to sign Man Utd and Man City target

Rio Ferdinand believes Liverpool and Chelsea should enter the race to sign Jack Grealish and says the Aston Villa captain would improve ‘every team in the Premier League’.

Grealish has established himself as one of the stars of English football over the past 12 months, thriving for boyhood club Villa in the Premier League emerging as a regular for England.

The 25-year-old started just one of England’s seven 2020 European Championship matches but was nonetheless a firm fans’ favourite.

Manchester City are believed to be the frontrunners to sign Grealish this summer, with Pep Guardiola ready to sanction a bid of almost £100million to bring him to the Etihad.

Their local rivals United have also been linked with a move for Grealish but Ferdinand does not expect his former side to secure his signature given the attacking players Ole Gunnar Solskjaer already has at Old Trafford.

Ex-Manchester United and England defender Ferdinand believes both Liverpool and Chelsea should enter the race for ‘phenomenal’ Grealish, however, as they bid to challenge Man City for the Premier League title next season.

‘I would love him to join Manchester United, obviously. But I just feel that the position that he plays is stacked,’ Ferdinand told the FIVE YouTube channel.

‘Bruno [Fernandes] in a ten, [Marcus] Rashford’s on the left, [Anthony] Martial is there, [Paul] Pogba is there. It kind of rules Manchester United out unless they say, “no, we’re going to shift a player or two to get him”. That’s the big decision they have to make.

‘There aren’t many breathtaking footballers around anymore who produce breathtaking moments and make you go, “wow that was crazy”. Jack Grealish does that. He’s just a phenomenal player.

‘If he’s going to go anywhere, I think it will be Man City. He would add to that team.

‘Jack Grealish is driven, he’s been loyal, the fact he stayed at Villa last season is enough for them to clap him out of the stadium. He’s paid his dues and done great things, helped get them up and kept them in the Premier League.’

Ferdinand added: ‘Does he improve every team in the Premier League? Yes he does, end of argument. He improves every team.

‘If I’m Liverpool, I’m going to get him. If I’m Man City, I’m taking him. Because he improves them. He improves Chelsea, 100%. Whoever’s got the money to pay for him, do it.

‘If Liverpool bought him it would be a bolt out of the blue. He improves them and then it’s like, “wow”.’

Chelsea are preparing to bolster Thomas Tuchel’s squad after the German replaced Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge midway through last season and led the club to Champions League glory.

Liverpool, meanwhile, failed to defend their Premier League title last term, eventually finishing third after a difficult campaign, 17 points behind champions Manchester City.
