Rashford's winner against Wolves bears spooky similarity to Park goal
Now that’s a proper ghost goal! Eagle-eyed Manchester United fan posts clip of Ji-Sung Park’s late 2010 winner against Wolves with eerie similarities to Marcus Rashford’s late winner on Tuesday night
- Marcus Rashford’s 93rd-minute winner against Wolves came off Romain Saiss
- Ex-midfielder Park Ji-Sung’s goal 10 years ago also came in the same minute
- The Red Devils went second in the league with both Rashford and Park’s strikes
- The assists by Bruno Fernandes and Darren Fletcher went out to the same wing
- Both late strikes were taken from similar places and went in at the near post
Marcus Rashford’s winner against Wolves on Tuesday at Old Trafford hauled Manchester United up to second – but the goal has caught the eye for a far more spooky reason.
Eagle-eyed United fan Ryan Groves noticed it bore a striking resemblance to another stoppage-time winner scored by Park Ji-sung at The Theatre of Dreams against the same opponent back in November 2010 as United won 2-1.
‘That Rashford winner reminds me of a late winner I witnessed live in Old Trafford at 13 years old,’ Groves tweeted. ’10 years later and it’s the same effort, same goal, same opponent, same minute and same outcome. The yanited way.’ He’s not wrong.

Park Ji-sung’s strike was weirdly similar to Rashford’s effort and also came in the 93rd minute
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men looked set to be held to a frustrating goalless draw that would have left the Red Devils fourth.
However, Bruno Fernandes kept plugging away and his long pass from inside his own half was seized on by Rashford, who collected the ball on the right edge of the penalty area.
The 23-year-old then moved inside before feinting to shoot, shifting the ball onto his left foot and trying his luck with an effort that deflected off the unfortunate Romain Saiss and wrongfooted Rui Patricio.
Park’s goal 10 years ago was uncannily similar. Instead of Fernandes, it was Darren Fletcher who supplied the key pass down the right-hand channel.
The South Korean had a wall of old gold shirts in front of him but drove into the box in a manner similar to Rashford, evading the attentions of one defender before placing a shot just inside the left-hand post – the same side as Rashford’s goal – beyond Marcus Hahnemann.
To make things even weirder, the goals were scored in the same minute and both strikes took the club up to second in the Premier League.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men led the league from late November and won the title by nine points
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side went on to win the league by nine points in 2010-11, as the Scot led his team to top spot three weeks after the victory over Wolves as Blackburn were thrashed 7-1 on November 27, with Dimitar Berbatov scoring five that day.
From that point on, they never relinquished their place at the summit before sewing up the title with a 1-1 draw at Ewood Park on the penultimate weekend of the season.
Solskjaer can only hope for such a scenario, but Liverpool’s unexpected goalless draw with Newcastle will have given the Norwegian hope heading into 2021.
