Prince William and Kate pay tribute to Christian Eriksen – and praise referee

Prince William has praised referee Anthony Taylor and sent his best wishes to Christian Eriksen after the midfielder collapsed on the pitch during Denmark’s opening game of Euro 2020.

English referee Taylor brought the game to a halt just before half time after spotting that Eriksen had collapsed with no-one around him.

Taylor immediately ushered medical staff onto the field, allowing the ex- Tottenham star to receive life-saving CPR.

Denmark’s players, in particular captain Simon Kjaer, and the fast-acting medics all received immense credit for their role in the incident, and so too did Taylor.

Prince William singled out the 42-year-old official – an experienced Premier League referee – for his calm and measured response.

He tweeted: “Encouraging news about Christian Eriksen, we are all thinking about him and his family.

“Well done to the medical team and Anthony Taylor for their calm and swift action. W.”

Eriksen was given urgent medical care and taken to a local hospital where he was brought to a stable condition following the horrific ordeal.

Reports claim that he even spoke to his Denmark team-mates from his hospital bed and gave them the go-ahead to finish the match.

Finland eventually won the tie 1-0 with a goal from Joel Pohjanpalo.

Denmark boss Kasper Hjumland broke down in tears after the game but hailed his side’s unity in the face of adversity.

He said: “Everything, everything, everything – all thoughts are with Christian and his family.

"A group of players that I cannot praise enough. First of all, if it gets emotional, it's been a tough night.

“We are all reminded of what the most important thing in life is – to have valuable relationships, people we're close to, our family and our friends.

"We have a group of players that I cannot praise enough. I couldn't be prouder of those people who took such good care of each other.

“He is one of my very dear friends, the way the players talked in the dressing room to decide to not do anything before we knew Christian was conscious and OK.”
