‘We just said hello and goodbye’: Mauricio Pochettino reveals NO discussions took place with Lionel Messi about his future after PSG’s demolition of Barcelona on Tuesday

  • Lionel Messi’s contract at Barcelona expires this year and he could move to PSG
  • Messi’s current side were on the receiving end of a humbling on Tuesday night
  • But Pochettino revealed only pleasantries exchanged with Messi in midweek
  • The PSG boss added that he hopes Kylian Mbappe’s future will be resolved soon

PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino says no discussions took place with Lionel Messi in the aftermath of the French side’s win at Barcelona on Tuesday evening.

Pochettino’s side came back from a goal down – via a Messi penalty – to thrash their opponents 4-1 in the Champions League, with star striker Kylian Mbappe scoring a scintillating hat-trick.

With Messi’s contract at Barca expiring at the end of the season, PSG are the frontrunners for the 33-year-old’s signature but fellow Argentine Pochettino insists no conversation about his future took place at the Nou Camp.

Mauricio Pochettino revealed that just pleasantries were exchanged with Barca’s Lionel Messi

The pair did cross paths immediately after the full-time whistle, but Pochettino confirmed it was just pleasantries that were shared.

‘With Messi, we just said hello and goodbye,’ Pochettino told Spanish outlet Tot Costa de Catalunya, as reported by Sport

‘We did not talk about his future.’

Latest reports on Messi’s future state that Manchester City have not offered the six-time Ballon d’Or winner a contract totalling £430m, with a City spokesperson insisting there have been no offers made, either in the summer or since.

Meanwhile, Pochettino said that he hopes Mbappe’s future will be resolved soon amid speculation about a move away for the Frenchman this summer.

Real Madrid and Liverpool are being closely linked with the 22-year-old, whose contract at the Parc des Princes expires next year, but Pochettino says he hopes Mbappe will be at the club ‘for many years.’

Mbappe has one year left on his PSG contract and is reportedly keen for a different challenge

‘We have absolute confidence that PSG can give Mbappe all the tools he needs to be happy in his sports career,’ Pochettino added.

‘I think it is an issue that will be clarified soon. We are working to ensure that he is at PSG for many years.’

PSG welcome Barcelona to the Parc des Princes on March 10 with a commanding three-goal advantage after their convincing last-16 first leg win in midweek.
