Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang claims Thomas Partey "locked down" three Man Utd stars

Thomas Partey played a huge role in Arsenal's win over Manchester United by "locking down' several players.

That's according to Gunners skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who fired the north Londoners to victory at Old Trafford last weekend.

Aubameyang's second-half penalty proved to be the difference at the Theatre of Dreams, with the Gabon international's spot-kick handing Arsenal their first away victory against a 'Big Six' side in five years.

The 31-year-old was delighted with the team's display at Old Trafford, saying in Arsenal's matchday programme: “It was a great performance from the whole team and it was great to see Thomas Partey play like that even though he’s not been here long.

“Off the pitch, he’s a really humble guy and you can see that on the pitch as well because he really gives everything in the game.

“He is really simple and quiet, so humble, and we all really like him.

"He’s really funny too – sometimes he’ll do some jokes and we won’t be expecting it. So he’s settled in really quickly.

“On the pitch, his strengths are his energy and the way he can stop counter-attacks and dangerous situations. That’s really important for us.”

Partey, who the Gunners signed from Atletico Madrid on transfer deadline day, kept United's star-studded midfield of Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay quiet for the majority of last weekend's match.

“I think he locked down three of Manchester United’s midfielders on Sunday – that’s my point of view anyway – and that’s really important for us," Aubameyang continued.

“Also he can play forward really well when he regains the ball and that’s a good point for us.”

Partey's impressive performance against United didn't go unnoticed, with former Red Devils defender Rio Ferdinand lamenting his old side's decision not pursue the Ghana midfielder's signature.

"Partey, I said a while ago back in April," the 41-year-old said in a video on his YouTube channel "Before that even, when I was talking about who Man United should buy – that was my guy."

Partey and his Arsenal team-mates will be back in action on Sunday evening, welcoming Aston Villa to the Emirates.
