Arsenal legend Paul Merson is set to become a father for the eighth time.

The 52-year-old revealed the news while working as a pundit on Sky Sports during Soccer Saturday.

Viewers were even made to think that Merson had to dash to the hospital to be by his wife’s side, though he had really just popped to the toilet.

Though wife Kate is set to give birth for Merson’s eighth child.

Merson has had children with his two previous wives Lorraine Costin and Louise with son Sam having followed his dad into football.

Merson was reporting on the Championship clash between Norwich and Barnsley when he announced his news.

Son Sam had previously said of his childhood: “If I wasn’t playing, I was watching. Every time I could, I’d go and watch my dad.

“Then when he stopped, I would go and watch Arsenal. Eventually my brothers stopped playing to work, but I just carried on.

“It was just something I had to do. I wasn’t the cleverest. I didn’t have a lot of brains. I wasn’t born to sit in an office. I have to be out and about.”

Merson’s children include a set of twin girls Maisie and Mollie with ex-wife Louise.

Sam was one of three children from his first marriage, along with Charlie and Ben.

Merson was the only regular to keep his place on Soccer Saturday with the likes of Matt Le Tissier, Charlie Nicholas and Phil Thompson leaving the show.

And viewers were surprised he stayed on Saturday with his wife due to give birth, with one writing on social media: “As if Paul Merson is still working on soccer Saturday when his Mrs is due.”

With another adding: “Paul Merson leaving Soccer Saturday early, his Mrs having his 8th kid. Rather you than me Merse.”
