Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s injury updates over Cavani and other Man Utd blows
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided an important injury update to a number of the club's key players.
Solskjaer was speaking before United's Premier League clash with Newcastle and addressed the absence of striker Edinson Cavani.
He also talked through the loss of Scott McTominay, who had been expected to continue his partnership alongside Fred.
Instead, Solskjaer was forced to start with Nemanja Matic in his midfield two, while Anthony Martial got the nod up-front.
The United boss told BT Sport: "He’s [Cavani] not fit yet. With injuries we can’t force players to play too early, it’s too risky. Hopefully Thursday, maybe Sunday.
"Yeah Scott [McTominay] as well injured, Nemanja had to come in. Scotty hurt his ankle. Nemanja has played many games and he’s ready to get going."
On Fred and Matic in midfield, he said: “The two of them have played together before. Paul, Donny and Scott are all injured so I’m glad I’ve got Fred and Nemanja."
Daniel James retained his place in the side to the surprise of many, although Solskjaer believed it was an easy decision to make.
He continued: “I thought his performance [against Sociedad] was excellent, he gave us energy in the pressing, gives us runs in behind and keeps the width for us. We felt he deserved another start.”
