Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been sacked by Manchester United following a disastrous start to the season.

The Red Devils have struggled this season and were beaten 4-1 at Watford in the latest poor result for the Norwegian.

In a statement, the club said: "Manchester United announces that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left his role as manager.

"Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision. While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success.

"Ole leaves with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts as Manager and our very best wishes for the future. His place in the club’s history will always be secure, not just for his story as a player, but as a great man and a Manager who gave us many great moments. He will forever be welcome back at Old Trafford as part of the Manchester United family.

"Michael Carrick will now take charge of the team for forthcoming games, while the club looks to appoint an interim manager to the end of the season."

Solskjaer had previously been backed by the United board but the humiliating defeat to the relegation-threatened Hornets proved to be the breaking point following embarrassing losses to Liverpool and rivals Manchester City.

United have now cut ties with the club legend, putting an end to his near three-year reign.

Solskjaer was initially appointed to the role in December 2018 on a caretaker basis following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

But having won 14 of his first 19 games in charge, Solskjaer signed a three-year contract to take over on a permanent basis in March 2019.

He led United to third and then second-placed league finishes in his two full seasons in charge.

However, he failed to win any silverware during this time, losing four semi-finals of competitions before reaching a Europa League showdown with Villarreal last season, which they lost on penalties.

In July of this year United handed Solskjaer a three-year contract extension to keep him with the club until 2024, with the option of another year too.

Following the summer arrivals of Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, expectations reached their peak for the new campaign.

And Solskjaer has failed to live up to these expectations, with the last result of his tenure his "darkest day" as United manager.
