Neville likens Man City's win over Arsenal to a Mayweather masterclass

Gary Neville likens Man City’s win over Arsenal to a Floyd Mayweather masterclass after they ‘won the first three rounds and then just jabbed for the next nine’… taking Pep Guardiola’s side TEN points clear and their winning run to an incredible 18 games

  • City are now 10 points clear in Premier League and have won 18 games in a row

Gary Neville has likened Manchester City’s victory over Arsenal to a Floyd Mayweather boxing masterclass, after they ‘suffocated’ their opponents out of the game.

City beat Arsenal 1-0 thanks to a very early Raheem Sterling header, before a stellar defensive display secured the win that took them 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League.

And Sky Sports supremo Neville says the performance reminded him of 50-0 legendary boxer Mayweather, in that they ‘won the first three rounds, got in front, and then just jabbed for the next nine rounds.’

Raheem Sterling scored the only goal as Manchester City beat Arsenal on Sunday afternoon

Sterling’s goal came in the first couple of minutes and City then protected their narrow lead

Speaking on his podcast, Neville said: ‘To be able to do that is special. I remember when we played games away in the Premier League, in many games that we won 1-0, it was always an onslaught in the last 10 minutes. But Pep Guardiola’s side win games without that onslaught. It’s really special, and the bravery in that defence is fantastic.

‘If you think back over the years, we know Pep’s teams are built on possession, but when he has been most successful, he has had great defensive records.

‘I thought Man City’s weakness last year was that when they kept the ball high up the pitch – which they’ve always done with Pep Guardiola – the problem is they were allowing teams to cut back through them too easily. But they are sustaining attacks again.

Gary Neville says the victory was like a ‘suffocating’ Floyd Mayweather boxing performance

Neville says City won the first three rounds and then ‘just jabbed for the next nine’ at Arsenal

‘I used the word suffocation because the two full-backs press in, Joao Cancelo comes inside, Oleksandr Zinckenko comes inside, Fernandinho is there, and they’ve got that block of five players, two at the back, three in front. So when any team wins it back, they’ve got nothing to go back through.

‘They’re so aggressive, so connected, compact on the ball and out of possession. It’s brilliant to watch. It’s methodical. It almost became too easy for Manchester City.’

City have now recorded an incredible 18 straight victories, and they look to be gliding to another Premier League title under Guardiola.

Their winning run stretches back to December 19, when they followed up two draws with a win away at Southampton.

In the months that have followed, City have beaten the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United – with Borussia Monchengladbach next up in the Champions League.
