Kylian Mbappe has admitted he held talks with Liverpool prior to sensationally snubbing Real Madrid in favour of a Paris Saint-Germain stay.

The French forward has been the subject of an epic transfer tug-of-war over the past year of so but has finally put one of football's most drawn-out and fascinating sagas to bed. Despite appearing set to sign for Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer, the superstar striker has seemingly made an astonishing U-turn, instead opting to remain in the French capital.

PSG confirmed at the weekend that the 23-year-old has penned a new mega-money deal at the club to keep him in Paris until 2025 – an agreement which was slammed as "scandalous" by La Liga, who subsequently promised to report the French giants to UEFA and the EU. However, it appears the battle for Mbappe's sought-after signature was far from a two-horse race.

The World Cup winner has since revealed he did, in fact, hold talks with Liverpool as he contemplated his next career move. Opening up on the prospect of joining the Jurgen Klopp's ranks, Mbappe told The Telegraph: “We talked a little bit, but not too much. We talked a little bit," before adding that the Reds had a greater chance of signing him in 2017 when he departed Monaco for PSG.

He continued: “I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool. I don’t know why, you will have to ask her!” he added, while reportedly laughing and nodding towards his equalling as amused mother Fayza Lamari. “It’s a good club and we met them five years ago.

"When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club. Of course, it was between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in the end.”

Mbappe would then choose to repay his faith in PSG and opt to give something back to his native France. The forward confirmed he called Real Madrid president Florentino Perez personally to inform him of his decision, rather than messaging him on WhatsApp as had previously been suggested. Mbappe added: “Everybody knows I wanted to leave for Real Madrid last year and I think it was a good choice to leave last year. But now it’s different.

"I was a free agent and it was important to give back to my country. If I had left I would have left as a great player but there is a sentimental part. I don’t think my chapter is closed. Things were not over for me at PSG."

Things don't appear over for Liverpool's fans either. It's more than fair to say Reds supporters are hopeful of landing Mbappe when his new PSG now runs out in three years' time.

Taking to Twitter en masse, the club's supporters could be seen using the hashtag #Mbappe2025 alongside excited posts over the prospect of landing the French superstar in the future. One fan posted: "#Mbappe2025 he's coming Liverpool," while another wrote, "#Mbappe2025 @LFC make it happen."

Several others posted similar messages, such as "Mbappe to Liverpool in 2025 then! Vamos #Mbappe2025" while one even asserted that the Frenchman would have struggled to break into Liverpool's current front three anyway. Imitating Mbappe's thought-process, the fan wrote: "'I realised I can’t get in that team, so I’ll wait another 3 years when Salah and Mane will be 33.'"
