Mascherano’s hopes for Liverpool Champions League glory rely on a change of luck

Liverpool hero Javier Mascherano believes his former club could be a danger in this season's Champions League.

But only if they are given a reprieve on the injury front.

The Reds have suffered a plethora of problems in the medical department in recent months, subsequently leaving them out of the Premier League title race at present.

And Mascherano thinks the only chance they can regain their 2019 Champions League crown is if they get their best players back as soon as possible.

"I think the injuries punished them a lot," he told beIN Sports. "They had lost their luck with many injuries at the same [position].

"It was not easy to overcome, but if the club succeeds in bringing back some key players to their normal state, it will be a team to fear in the Champions League.

"Bayern Munich, of course, is one of the great candidates (to win the Champions League) and English teams as well, Manchester City in particular but we have to see how these teams qualify for the final stages."

Klopp was pressed on the club's rotten luck with injuries this season.

But the German was keen not to dwell on the struggles of earlier in the campaign.

"All the weeks and months you can see easily it is a mix of different things that happened. Now is not the time to explain,” Klopp said.

“Injuries have played part in it, you can’t ignore them, it changed everything.

“It’s like building a house, if the foundations are not right things are a bit shaky.
