Manchester United picked up a crucial victory with a 4-0 win over Real Sociedad on Thursday evening. Bruno Fernandes struck twice for the Red Devils while Marcus Rashford and Daniel James were also on target, much to the delight of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. And they’re now in pole position to make the quarter-finals of the competition.

United had only won one of their last six matches prior to the match against Sociedad.

And despite not winning away in Spain since 2017, they were able to overcome that record to pick up a crucial win.

Fernandes was the hero for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, with the Portugal international striking in the 27th minute.

He then doubled his side’s lead in the second half and, though Sociedad were plucky, Rashford and James then scored to make the result safe.

Express Sport will now pick out United’s best three players from their victory in Turin, one that means they’re in pole position to make the quarter-finals.

Bruno Fernandes

Who else?

When United signed Fernandes, they were a club stuck in a rut. However, ever since his arrival 13 months ago, he’s elevated the team to sensational heights.

He was a constant menace against Sociedad, posing all sorts of problems for the La Liga side.

And his two goals summed up a perfect afternoon for the midfielder, who has now scored 21 goals across all competitions this term.

Who knows how many he could manage before the season ends?

Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford was guilty of missing some big chances in the match against Sociedad.

But the England international played a key role in both of Fernandes’ goals and, due to his pace, got in on the act himself in the second half.

Certainly, he needs to improve his finishing.

But his all-round game has improved considerably and the way he performed, especially in a match of such magnitude, bodes well for the future.

United will want the 23-year-old to find the net more often but Solskjaer will undoubtedly be pleased with his energetic display.

Dean Henderson

There were definitely other good performers on the pitch for United.

But Dean Henderson played a big role in the victory, marshalling the troops in front of him with unflinching authority.

Henderson could often be heard shouting at his players to move up the pitch, while also venting his fury whenever they let Sociedad get near him.

Furthermore, he also made a couple of neat stops the keep the ‘home’ side at bay.

And, on this evidence, David De Gea definitely faces a massive challenge when it comes to holding onto the No 1 jersey.

What next?

United won’t have long to celebrate the win over Sociedad.

Newcastle are next up on Sunday – and they’ll be looking to repeat the victory they managed over Solskjaer’s side at St James’ Park last term.

United have beaten Newcastle already this season, winning 4-1 back in October.

After that comes the return leg against Sociedad on March 9.
