Manchester United target Bruno Fernandes backed to leave Sporting with a bang

Manchester United are hoping to seal Bruno Fernandes’ January transfer ahead of this weekend’s clash against Liverpool at Anfield.

The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford since the summer of 2019, with a deal finally set to go ahead this week.

Sporting Lisbon take on Benfica on Friday which is likely to be Fernandes’ last game at the club, and former Portugal international Dani is backing the midfielder to leave on a high.

He told A Bola : “If Bruno really does transfer, it seems to only be a matter of time and detail.

“If it happens I think he would like to make it big, if possible with a great showing, with goals and that his club winning.

“That would be a good football show. That is for me to go big.”

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was asked directly about United's interest in Fernandes earlier this week, but remained coy.

"I’ve got no transfer updates, so no," he said when asked about the midfielder.

"If we get something that we can tell you about we will but I’ve got no news now.

He then added: "For me, the most important thing is that we get the results we want, that we get the performances on the pitch.

“That’s my focus, that’s got to be my focus.

"But I know that I – or we – have got the resources, we’ve got the backing if we need to go into the transfer market for example."

Solskjaer had stated earlier in the month that he hoped to bring one or two new players before hitting out at claims he wasn't forthright with chief Ed Woodward over deals.

When asked if he was ‘forthright’, he said: “Solskjaer said: "Of course I am. Ask him if I am.

“Of course we have got open discussions and of course we're open and honest and we talk.

"We are building towards something and I'm almost getting bored myself talking about this.”
