Manchester United in talks to hijack Barcelona's £108m transfer
Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann could join Manchester United instead of Barcelona this summer after talks were reopened with the Premier League giants.
The Frenchman told Diego Simeone he wanted to leave the club last week and Atletico quickly released a statement declaring he would be sold in an effort to come to a swift resolution.
Barcelona manager revealed on Sunday that the Catalans had already initiated contact with Greizmann over a move to the Camp Nou but clarified that talks were at an early stage.
Griezmann had been expected to join the La Liga winners but the Independent claim Barcelona are having second thoughts over paying the Frenchman’s £108m release clause.
Barcelona have already agreed a £75m deal to sign Frenkie de Jong and are keen to sign his Ajax team-mate Matthijs de Ligt, who is expected to cost around £85m.
That’s led the Barcelona board to question the logic of splashing out such an amount on a 28-year-old Griezmann and the report claims that’s led to a reopening of talks with United.
Griezmann had been a target for Jose Mourinho in 2017 and the World Cup winner rated his chances of joining the club as ‘60%’ in June that summer.
However, Atletico were slapped with a transfer ban and Griezmann decided to stay in the Spanish capital as they could not sign a replacement.
Other than interest from Barcelona, United would have a relatively clear path should they move for Griezmann given Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester City are not interested.
Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez are expected to be sold this summer and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants a dynamic forward to play alongside Marcus Rashford.
The report claims that key figures in football now even believe Griezmann is ‘more likely’ to end up at United than Barcelona.
