Manchester United star Paul Pogba has admitted his side are ‘disappointed’ in the wake of their 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday night. The Red Devils saw their hopes of Carabao Cup glory ended by John Stones and Fernandinho on a frustrating evening at Old Trafford. It means their wait for silverware will go on, with the club yet to win a trophy since Jose Mourinho’s spell in charge.

United had their moments against City, with both Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford failing to capitalise on some good opportunities.

But they slipped to defeat against their fierce rivals on home turf.

Stones put City in front shortly after half time, with the England international bumbling the ball over the line after a corner caused chaos in the box.

And Fernandinho made the result safe late on, with the Brazil international’s powerful low drive sailing past the unsighted Dean Henderson.

Speaking after the game, Pogba admitted United players were disappointed.

And he put their four semi-final defeats under Solskjaer down to the ‘little details’.

He told MUTV: “Of course it is disappointing because it is not the first one against City at home.

“We are disappointed with the result, obviously, with the two goals from set-pieces.

“It can go both ways but we lost today. It is not the first one, like I said.

“It is very annoying to lose because there is a trophy behind all of this. We have to do better, we have to do better for sure.”

He then added: “It is details. Details make the difference all of the time and now when it is big games like this, it is details and at set-pieces we lost.

“We have to learn and we have to learn, because it is not the first time.

“We have to learn, we have to get through this because, after this, there are big games coming up after tonight and tomorrow we will go again.”

Pogba doesn’t want the result to impact United’s season, with the club still having much to play for.

Victory over Burnley next week will see them leapfrog Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table, while they remain in contention for FA Cup and Europa League glory.

And the France international added: “Exactly. Today we know we lost and there is no time to be disappointed for a week, because we know where we are.

“We are in a good position now. It is difficult and it is going to be difficult, and you learn from those games.

“It is going to hopefully help us to get through, to get better and to have a positive result in the next games.”

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in a rueful mood after the match against City, saying: ”Manchester City can score many great goals. You can accept that. When you concede two simple set-plays, it’s very disappointing. Just not good enough in those moments.

“We didn’t create enough big chances. They didn’t either. We didn’t have the extra finesse we’ve had in the games lately. We weren’t good enough today.

“We played against a very good Manchester City team. They played well. When they play well you have to play very well to beat them. We were just lacking that little bit.

“We’re getting closer. This is a much better version of United than a year ago in those semis.

“It’s not psychological [losing in four semis]. Sometimes you meet good teams in the semis. We met, at the moment, City are probably the best team in England.”
