Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has a new injury flare-up to contend with after Victor Lindelof received a fresh round of treatment while on international duty. The Swede revealed to reporters that he has been playing with a broken toe for the past few months, forcing him to make some unorthodox changes.
Lindelof played the full 90 minutes on Monday night as Sweden thrashed Azerbaijan 5-0. Another United star, Anthony Elanga, was also involved as he came off the bench to score the final goal of the game.
Not all the news was positive, however, as Lindelof reportedly had to receive treatment after the final whistle. He then revealed that he had been playing through the pain barrier over the past few months, requiring him to wear a football boot one size bigger than his normal size.
“I broke my toe in September, and I felt it tightening out there,” he explained. “It was with the national team in September. I got a stamp so I broke it. It hurt for a while, I had to take some painkillers. I could play, but only had a size bigger on the shoe.”

It remains to be seen whether Ten Hag will look to call on Lindelof for this Sunday’s crunch Premier League clash with Newcastle United. Raphael Varane is still being assessed after missing the last two games before the international break.
Lindelof has had to fight for minutes so far this campaign, with Varane and Lisandro Martinez establishing themselves as Ten Hag’s starting centre-back duo. Club captain Harry Maguire is also in the picture, making the scrap for game time even more competitive.

With just five Premier League starts under his belt this season, Lindelof may look to seek out a new opportunity in the summer. The 28-year-old is approaching the final 12 months of his contract at Old Trafford, having last signed renewed terms way back in 2019.
The Red Devils’ forthcoming showdown with the Magpies could have serious implications on the top-four race, with United heading into the gameweek in third place, two positions ahead of Newcastle.
Ten Hag’s side may have the psychological advantage over their opponents after beating them in the Carabao Cup final last month. “It leaves us with a feeling of a defeat in a final and that is never nice,” said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe at the time.
“We are desperately disappointed but already for me you look to the future, and you are desperate to get back here and win a trophy. To see the supporters, who have been absolutely incredible for us this year, disappointed and hurt, it hurts bad.”
