Man Utd ‘put four players up for sale’ after transfer chief jetted off to Saudi

'Man Utd deserved their point' | Liverpool couldn't break down Erik ten Hag's side

Manchester United have reportedly placed as many as four of Erik ten Hag’s players up for sale in January after football director John Murtough recently jetted out to Saudi Arabia for discussions ahead of the transfer window. The Red Devils’ priority is to move on certain high earners at Old Trafford, with Casemiro among those to come up in talks.

The Daily Mail claim that as part of Murtough’s visit to the Middle East to meet with big-spending clubs in the Saudi Pro League, Casemiro was brought up as a player who is available for transfer in January.

The club have also put Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial up for sale. However, Murtough was unable to successfully negotiate an agreement for any of the four players while he was in Saudi Arabia.

United’s number one priority is said to be shifting Sancho after he was banished from the club following a public disagreement with Ten Hag. He has interest from Juventus and Borussia Dortmund but those links are yet to materialise into a departure away from the club.

United are willing to listen to offers for Casemiro, Varane and Martial although they are not actively being pushed out by the Red Devils in the same manner that Sancho is.

Both Varane and Martial’s contracts expire at the end of the season, though the former Real Madrid defender has an option to extend his deal for another year. The club may trigger that extension, but they will not be doing so for Martial and January represents the last opportunity that United can receive a fee for the French forward.

Casemiro has spent just over a year at United since his £70m move from Real Madrid. Sir Jim Ratcliffe did raise an issue with the deal for the Brazilian at the time and his arrival as a minority owner is expected to be confirmed in the near future.

United are hoping to strengthen Ten Hag’s squad once again in January as they hope to sign a centre-back, central midfielder and a striker in their bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

However, with the club wary of Financial Fair Play concerns, they may be forced to sell stars such as Casemiro, Varane, Martial and Sancho before they can spend again after splashing out in the summer on the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Andre Onana.
