Manchester United have reportedly made an offer to the agents of Denis Zakaria in an attempt to sign him this month. But United are yet to submit an offer to Borussia Monchengladbach for the Switzerland international. The midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and could be available in a cut-price deal.
United are yet to make any signings in the January transfer window.
The Red Devils are not expected to splash out on many major incomings.
Outgoings could be on the agenda, with Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial linked with moves away.
But now interest in Zakaria has surfaced from Germany.
Sport Bild reporter Christian Falk claims United have made an offer to the agents of the 25-year-old midfielder.
United interim boss Ralf Rangnick is said to be a big fan of Zakaria.
No bid has been made to Monchengladbach but United are allowed to discuss a transfer with Zakaria due to his contract situation.
Falk reports that a number of top clubs are interested in signing Zakaria on a free transfer in the summer.
However, United have an advantage because they are willing to strike a deal to sign the player this month.
Express Sport understands Monchengladbach are willing to accept offers of around £6million for the player.
Sport1 claims Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Liverpool are also all interested in Zakaria.
He joined Monchengladbach from Swiss side Young Boys in 2017.
He has started 14 Bundesliga matches so far this season but has not featured recently after testing positive for COVID-19.
United spent big last summer on three major signings.
Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo were all brought to the club.
Varane and Sancho in particular have struggled to make the desired impact on the Premier League.
Ronaldo has saved his best form for the Champions League in particular.
But even the Portugal superstar has received criticism for his performances in a United shirt.
Rangnick’s side made it through to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a narrow 1-0 win over Aston Villa on Monday.
A trip to Villa Park is on the agenda on Saturday in the Premier League.
The Red Devils currently sit seventh in the table, four points behind Arsenal in fourth with a game in hand.
