Man Utd loss to Man City shows Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still needs transfer target
There has been constant speculation that Manchester United are targeting a striker in recent transfer windows, and that should continue following another semi-final defeat.
The Red Devils were beaten by Manchester City in the last four of the League Cup following three semi defeats last season.
Anthony Martial was the focal point in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s line-up at Old Trafford though got very little change from City defenders Ruben Dias and John Stones.
The United boss was probably cursing Edinson Cavani’s three-match ban with very little sticking up top for the hosts.
And while Cavani has impressed this season, Solskjaer should still target a new striker – one that can shine at United for years to come rather than months.
At 33, Cavani’s best years are probably behind him and he won’t be at the Theatre of Dreams for too long.
Solskjaer tried to solve the problem last January by bringing in Odion Ighalo on loan but the Nigerian was never going to have the quality to thrive long-term at the Premier League giants.
The boss is likely to also be growing frustrated at Ed Woodward and Co’s pursuit of Erling Haaland 12 months ago.

The young Norwegian would have been just what United needed but he chose Borussia Dortmund when leaving RB Salzburg last winter.
An out and out No. 9 would allow the likes of Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood the freedom to use their pace out wide.
Martial wears the number, though seems to prefer life on the left, where Paul Pogba lined up against City.

There is no doubt Martial has the finishing ability but his speed is wasted through the middle.
Solskjaer has brought in a big and strong striker for the last two transfer windows but neither have been long-term solutions.
Now, with the Red Devils perilously close to tasting silverware again, it’s time to solve the striker problem for good.
