Manchester United could turn to three potential replacements if Cristiano Ronaldo follows up on his reported message to agent Jorge Mendes surrounding his future. The Portuguese is believed to be struggling with Ralf Rangnick’s style of play, and could be set to find a new club if United’s instability continues until the end of the campaign.
While the Red Devils do not appear to be planning a major influx of arrivals this January, a number of players would reportedly be open to an exit.
Broadly, the unsettled brigade at Old Trafford have become unhappy about their game time, and while Ronaldo is normally one of the first names on the team sheet, he could soon join them in their pursuit of a new challenge.
According to SPORT, the superstar has already asked super-agent Mendes to find him a new club, a search which could be granted extra urgency if United fail in their bid to qualify for the Champions League.
Amid the growing threat of their star name and top scorer leaving, Express Sport looks at three names who could come in to offset the blow:

While the 33-year-old is well into the twilight of his career, United are no strangers to signing marquee names who may be past their primes.
Except, Lewandowski’s goals record suggests that he is anything but past his prime, with 31 goals in 26 games for Bayern Munich this campaign testifying to that.
The Polish international would be far from a long-term option, but he could bring virtually guaranteed goals, which is exactly what would be lost if Ronaldo headed for the exit door.
Reports during the summer indicated that Lewandowski would be open to taking on a new challenge – something which the Red Devils could offer to gauge whether the veteran is still tempted.
From one prolific marksman to another, Vlahovic has captured the attention of numerous clubs this January, although finishing the season with Fiorentina remains a real possibility.
By which time, the 21-year-old would presumably come with a more manageable price-tag and another six months of experience under his belt.
With 18 goals scored in all competitions this season, Vlahovic still has the credentials to make an instant impact, even as the main striker at a top club like United.
But they would have to fend off competition from the likes of Juventus, Tottenham and Arsenal – that is, unless one of the chasing trio manages to thrash out a deal for Vlahovic this month.
Europe’s big hitters are still waiting patiently for the summer, when Haaland’s Borussia Dortmund release clause supposedly becomes active.
At around £62million, it has never been a case of whether Haaland is worth the money since he started lashing in Bundesliga goals for fun.
Instead, it is about who can table the most enticing offer for the 21-year-old, who has continued his rampant scoring streak this season.
Barcelona and Manchester City are deemed to be right in the mix, but if United were pressed into signing a star name in the case of Ronaldo’s departure, there aren’t too many better to excite fans than the Norwegian extraordinaire.
