Man Utd backed to make ‘star’ signing in January to increase title chances

Man Utd: Can Solskjaer lead team to title?

Manchester United could be just one “star” signing away from winning the Premier League, according to former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara. United are second in the table, three points behind leaders Liverpool with a game in hand. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are in a rich vein of form to raise fans hopes they can win their first title since the retirement of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

O’Hara believes United are well and truly in the race for top spot this season.

But he thinks they will use the January transfer market to improve their chances further.

O’Hara isn’t sure a striker is what United need but says a top addition in another position will be what Solskjaer is after.

“I think Man United are definitely in the hunt for it,” O’Hara said on talkSPORT.

“Man United, alright they’ve lost three, but they’ve won nine.

“You have to say that in the moment, Manchester United started off a bit shaky but all of a sudden you’re going: ‘They’ve picked up and they’ve kicked on’.

“If they can carry that form on, they’re right in the hunt.

“I don’t know if they need a No 9. I think Manchester United will definitely look to the transfer market to strengthen.

“I think the key thing in the title race for Man United is if they can get one star player which is going to improve the side.”

Meanwhile, transfer expert Ian McGarry says United are already looking at a long-term replacement for Edinson Cavani.

Cavani turns 34 in February and McGarry says Juventus star Paulo Dybala is being eyed by the Red Devils.

McGarry said on the Transfer Window podcast: “We know there have been conversations, negotiations, with Manchester United and Spurs over the last year to 18 months regarding a potential transfer of Dybala to the Premier League.

“Those discussions will certainly be continued should he turn down this final offer from Juve to extend his contract.

“It’s also our understanding that United see Dybala as a long-term solution to what has been a short-term solution in Edinson Cavani, in terms of his age.”

United face high-flying Aston Villa at Old Trafford tonight (8pm) before the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City next Wednesday.
