Manchester United are preparing to sign Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig next year.

The defender is highly rated and admired at Old Trafford, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having put the young Frenchman on his wish list.

A transfer before October 5’s deadline, though, is unlikely after he penned a new deal in Germany.

Back in July, the 21-year-old signed a contract extension with RB Leipzig.

"I extended in Leipzig, because I feel good with my team-mates and my coach. I’m good at Leipzig," said Upamecano.

"It’s true that I’m in great demand. I speak with clubs, but I’m in no rush and we’ll see what happens in the future."

The centre-half is now tied down with the Bundesliga side until 2023, which rules out a free transfer next summer.

If United were to move now, Upamecano would cost a significant amount, and United are reluctant to spend big as they continue to chase £108m-rated Jadon Sancho in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, Upamecano, who is being tracked by a host of top European clubs, will be available for a lot less next year.

A £38m release clause in his contract kicks in come 2021, and that would be a far more affordable figure for the Red Devils.

The Daily Mail say United are subsequently gearing towards a move next summer.

In the meantime, their pursuit of Sancho is still on and the Borussia Dortmund winger has spoken out on the constant transfer links in the media.

SoccerBible asked Sancho: "There’s always talk of moves linking you with Premier League clubs. Do you ever wish that would just go away?"

Sancho replied: "No, the media’s the media.

"They’re always going to try and create a story, but this is how you manage it.”
