Cristiano Ronaldo's 'number one choice' to be the new Manchester United manager laughed off links to the job on Sunday just hours after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dismissal.

Spain boss Luis Enrique, who led Barcelona to a historic treble back in 2014/15, had been one of many names liked with the role including Brendan Rogers and Zinedine Zidane.

However, the 51-year-old made his thoughts on the Old Trafford hot seat clear in a chat with Spanish media after the job became available.

Enrique is currently looking forward to the 2022 World Cup after securing qualification with a 1-0 win over Sweden in UEFA Group B earlier this month.

He asked La Sexta when told about Ronaldo's stance: “Is today April Fools’ Day?”

That comes after Sky Sports reported that Ronaldo thinks United should consider a move for Enrique after hearing that long-term target Mauricio Pochettino remains a priority.

United announced that Michael Carrick would assuming first-team coaching duties following Solskjaer's exit, adding that they are on the lookout for an interim boss to see out the season.

In addition, Solskjaer took part in an unusual exit interview in which hailed United supporters.

Mentioning his playing days, Solskjaer said: "They’ve [the fans] been amazing with me since one of my first kicks on the ball, I scored with one of the first ones, until now.

"And I’m sure we’ll meet again because if there’s anywhere, I’m going to watch football games, that’s from Old Trafford.”

Adding when asked about his plans to return: "Definitely. If you want me pitchside with you, I’m there!"

Although Ronaldo is yet to comment on Solskjaer's departure, several club legends and current stars have offered their support.

Harry Maguire wrote: "You signed me for the best club in the world and gave me the biggest honour in football. Huge respect and forever grateful. Thankyou for everything boss."

With Patrice Evra saying: "Thank you for making us believe in @ManUtd again my friend…"

While David Beckham said: “The most gracious man in the room.”
