Liverpool star Diogo Jota gives injury update and expects ‘big influence’ on return
Liverpool: Diogo Jota reacts to 2-0 win over FC Midtjylland
Liverpool star Diogo Jota has provided an update on the knee injury he’s been suffering with since the start of December, and vowed to return to action as soon as he can.
Jota made a brilliant start to life at Anfield after signing from Wolves in the summer.
The Portuguese attacker scored five goals in his first nine Premier League games, with another four coming in his first three Champions League matches.
Having initially been signed to provide backup for Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s famous front three, he quickly found himself established in the side in a four-man attack.
Jurgen Klopp was instantly impressed and kept him as a regular starter due to his impressive form, but his season was quickly derailed by a nasty knee injury.
Jota suffered a bruised knee against FC Midtjylland in the Champions League back at the start of December, and is yet to return.
Reds fans have been eager to see him return to the pitch as soon as possible, with some questioning the lack of depth in attack without him.
But writing in the club programme ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League clash against Southampton, Jota insisted he wouldn’t rush back to action.
“Things are going well,” he said.
“Knee injuries are always complicated so we cannot rush things, but I am doing well and I will be back on the field as soon as possible.
“When I’m fit, I know that I’ll give my best in each training session and then each day to give myself a chance of playing.”
Jota went on to express that he wants to be a “big influence” at Liverpool, and vowed to remain in the first-team once he returns.
“In Portugal, they used to say the hardest thing is not to arrive but to stay there,” he continued.
“So that of course is my target.
“Now that I have achieved a move to Liverpool, I want to be a big influence in this club and that’s what I try to do every day.”
Liverpool were boosted by the return of Thiago Alcantara last week against Newcastle, with the Spaniard coming on as a substitute at St James’ Park.
They are still without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, however, with the latter set to return later this month.
