Liverpool ‘prepared to spend big’ to land Sadio Mane replacement this summer

Liverpool might need to smash their transfer record in order to sign a replacement for Sadio Mane this summer as Jurgen Klopp eyes a return to the top of the Premier League.

The Reds failed to build on their title winning campaign of 2019/20 by being knocked out of both domestic cups and the Champions League, while slipping 22 points behind Manchester City in the table.

Although most stars will remain at the club to try and force them back to the top, many could target a new challenge after a difficult 12 months.

Mane is one of those who has been linked with an exit in recent months, with a replacement lined up should he end up leaving Anfield following the visit of Crystal Palace in late May.

According to in Spain, Liverpool are considering cashing in on Mane following a season that has so far only returned 12 goals in all competitions.

They add that Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele could then be brought in – although he would cost a large chunk of the £122m that they paid Borussia Dortmund for his services in 2017.

The France international, 23, is back in favour under Ronald Koeman in Spain, scoring 10 goals this season following several injury struggles since leaving Germany.

Mane, who is under contract until 2023, said regarding his future back in March: “When you are a fighter you never try to make excuses, we are here to find solutions. Being together with my teammates always gives me high energy.

“You can see the quality of the team, and if you came to the dressing room I think you would have no other option than to see your future like it is going to be bright because with this squad and this team there is the attitude and belief that everything will change.

“In football – and in life in general – you can’t expect anything and for years and years this complicated situation has not happened. We have always been successful, but now this has happened and we can see it is like how life is.”
