Diogo Jota has proved a revelation since joining Liverpool in the summer transfer window – but he wasn’t Jurgen Klopp ’s first choice.

Jota joined the Premier League champions in a £45million switch from Wolves and has hit the ground running at Anfield.

In his first 10 appearances, the Portugal international has scored seven goals including a hat-trick away at Atalanta in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

He has given Klopp a serious selection dilemma ahead of this weekend’s trip to Manchester City, with some calling for him to replace Roberto Firmino at the pinpoint of their attack.

Early signs suggest Jota’s signing couldn’t have worked out any better for Liverpool, especially considering he was a backup transfer target for the club.

Klopp originally had his sights set on a move for Watford ace Ismaila Sarr, only for the relegated club to slap a £45million price tag on their star man.

Despite the Reds’ best efforts, Watford would not budge on that asking price and Sarr remains at Vicarage Road as a result.

Liverpool were also eyeing up a potential deal for Timo Werner earlier this year before his move to Chelsea, but Klopp informed the player they would not be moving for him due to budget restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic.

After failing to land Sarr and Werner, they turned their attention to Jota and negotiated to pay Wolves just £4million upfront for the 23-year-old.

The Merseyside club will hand them the remaining £41million through a series of instalments, and their shrewd transfer business is already proving a major success.

Klopp has been delighted with Jota’s impact at Anfield, but insists the new recruit has not left him with a selection “headache”.

“Good performances never give me a headache. That was the decision [against Atalanta], it made sense to use the shape Diogo was in, and because of the way Atalanta plays and defends, it made sense that the skillset of Diogo helps.

“It's important for us that we have more than 11, and tonight Diogo used his shape in an incredible way and played a super, super game.”
