Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has reportedly made his mind up on whether or not to sell Naby Keita in the upcoming summer transfer window. When Liverpool agreed to pay £52.75million to sign Keita there was a lot of excitement on Merseyside on what the midfielder would bring to Anfield.

At the time, Liverpool had just scraped into fourth in the Premier League with Emre Can, Adam Lallana, Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum battling for a starting spot in midfield.

Klopp would go on to overhaul his midfield as Liverpool agonisingly missed out on winning the Champions League after losing to Real Madrid in the final.

Coutinho and Can had now left while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fabinho had joined Keita in giving Klopp brand new options in midfield.

The Guinea international was also given Steven Gerrard’s famous No 8 jersey with fans hoping the dimunitive midfielder would hit the ground running at Anfield.

But it’s been an arduous journey for Keita with a number of injury issues which have restricted him from building up momentum at Liverpool.

Last summer there was growing speculation that this season would prove to be crucial on whether the club would look to cut their losses on Keita.

He had shrugged off his previous injury troubles from the previous season and looked good in the limited pre-season fixtures.

And Klopp made it clear that Keita was going to be a top choice for him as the 26-year-old started Liverpool’s first four league matches.

But since contracting coronavirus in October, Keita has played just 152 minutes of Premier League football and is still recovering from an ankle injury he suffered in December.

With Liverpool’s season very much on the line heading into the final few months of the campaign, Klopp will be desperate to be able to call upon Keita in the coming weeks.

He’s not travelled with the squad to face RB Leipzig this evening, but there is hope that he could be involved against Everton this weekend.

It’s been suggested that Keita will be competing for his Liverpool future heading into the summer transfer window.

However, The Athletic claim that Klopp isn’t ready to give up on Keita quite yet and wants to give him more time to discover his best form.

Due to injuries, Klopp hasn’t had to worry about trying to keep all his options in midfield with happy with both Fabinho and Henderson have to play as makeshift centre-backs while summer signing Thiago Alcantara has only just returned to full fitness.

But once Klopp has all his midfielders back fit, the Liverpool boss has eight options to choose from and that could present a problem heading into the summer transfer window.

Wijnaldum’s future is yet to be decided and it’s looking increasingly likely that he will leave as a free agent.

But Curtis Jones’ emergence this season has arguably been one of the few highlights of Liverpool’s campaign so far and has dservedly earned a regular spot in the starting line-up.

The battle for Keita when he returns to fitness will be how to break into the team on a regular basis to warrant Klopp’s support.
